When more than one person emails me the same link in a period of 4 hours, my interest will surely be sparked and i may decided to take the time to check it out. In this instance I will lower my head and sheepishly admit, the thing that sparked my interest was the second of two short emails containing this guy’s link, that read and i quote,

“this stuff is radical. plus there are boobs. enjoy Kari.”

Now, let me tell you. That email was right. His stuff is radical and yes there are boobs.

China Design Now is an immersive, multi-sensory exploration of the graphic design, fashion, interior design, and architecture emerging from China today. By focusing on the creative output of three distinctive cities, China Design Now presents a rapidly changing cultural landscape that is transforming China and our collective definition of urban life.

I received my new copy of Aperture today and was struck by a series of photographs the presented from Rob Hornstra. The series precipitated from a an article the Dutch photographer read about Russia’s super rich. Horstra traveled to the peripheral towns untouched by such proseperity and explored the limited choices most people in Russia are facing. His rich work captures tensions between past and present amongst a crumbling nationalist landscape.

Kevin Vertucio had a funny, yet oh-so true article in issue 3 of Living Proof Magazine. Please read  for a good chuckle and a heavy dose of truth!

The Defgrip crew turned me on to this photo project by Brent Humphreys on the Tour de France. It is an artistic look at the lifestyle of the tour and the dedicated fan following. Hope you enjoy!

With the gentrification of seedy neighborhoods on the rise, the release of Watanabe Katsumi’s book Gangs of Kabukicho, serves as a visual record of Shinjuku’s red light district.  The photographs are from the 1960s and 70s and capture characters of violence, sex and transgression. Watanabe died last year at the age of 67. This book is a testament to his incredible ability to capture subtlety.

If you thought that the money you had given to this or that photo trade organization was useful, think again. ASMP, APA, EP, PPA, WHNPA, SA, and all of the other siblings are guilty of the same crime. Silence. Chris Usher has lost his appeal after a seven year battle against Corbis and each of his 12,640 images lost will be compensated for a lousy $7.00 a piece.

This ruling means that from now on, any agency, any magazine, any publisher will never have to worry about losing your photographs, since it will cost them peanuts to pay you back. It will be cheaper for them to trash them then returning them to you.

Also guilty are PDN, supposedly a trade news magazine, and other photography blogs, that are more interested in getting volumes of traffic to please their advertiser rather than report fairly on this industry.

They should all be put on the wall of shame for ignoring one of the longest and possibly important case in modern photography. Chris Usher was maybe crazy to take on the infinite cash Corbis but he did what he thought was a fair battle and lost. Not just because he couldn’t afford a legal team as powerful as the Bill Gates funded Corbis, but also because everyone ignore his battle, probably thinking it was a personal one.

In times where it is even more challenging to be a photographer than ever before, it is sad to see how helpless this industry has become, especially on the photographer’s side. It is sad to see how apathetic everyone is in face of challenges that will surely, one day, affect them too. Finally, it sad to see that, in the face of adversity, a photographer has no friends.

With all the talk of evolving camera technology, it’s sometimes nice to relish in the simpler things in life, like the discontinued Yashica T4. One of the best point and shoots out there, not to mention, one of Terry Richardson’s favorite fashion devices. The Zeiss lenses give the photos a beautiful quality. And it’s so easy to use. Just point and click. Ahhhh, easy. I’d like to get one of these in my hands and when I do, I’ll post some pics.

Michele Abeles’ work is a sultry, yet unnerving mixture of monumental nature, empty scenes and portraits. The Yale alum has been praised in recent years for incredible emerging works. The images leave you feeling like you’ve witness memories or echos of what has been, nostalgic and a little forlorn. 

I love the idea of a relational art and making biographical art through the places and people nearest to you. 

Well not exactly, had to give the National Enquirer headline a shot. Carlin Sundell works as a freelance photographer here at StudioNemo and is a good friend of ours. He recently attended a workshop on wet collodion plate photography. Wet collodion plate photography was developed by Frederik Archer in the mid 19th century. The image is exposed on to a glass or tin plate covered in collodion, a viscous liquid, made by dissolving nitrated cotton in a mixture of alcohol and ether and then light sensitive salts are applied to the plate, exposed, to create the photo. You literally need a entire chemistry kit in the field and work quickly in an ether rich environment to develop the plate. At some point a gas lantern is involved in the process… Chances for “KA-BLEWY” go way up! I suppose that’s half the fun, eh? Well fortunately Carlin returned not looking like THIS, and brought us back some amazing photos. Gives you an appreciation photography’s early years in today’s mind-numbing point and shoot world.

Being a skeptic of the field of landscape photography, I was shocked when the work of Tod Seelie changed my mind. After perusing (and loving) his landscape collection I was more than eager to take a look at his portraits. Alas, I was really disappointed…it seems as if he shoots all his humans subjects as “still life” and in doing so looses the most interesting thing about portraiture; Emotion. With such amazing characters as the ones he shoots I would hope for something more than a rigid figure standing front and center.

However, many seem to disagree with me. His work has been exhibited in New York, Berlin, Tokyo, Paris, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, Cleveland, and Miami. And has been featured in some amazing photo books including Backyard Shakedown and Hijacked.

One of the most unconventional female artists of the 20th century, Lee Miller was admired for her classical beauty, intelligence, and photographic talent. This retrospective spans her career as a photographer and explores her transformation from muse and model to groundbreaking artist in her own right. Born in New York in 1907, Miller modeled for Vogue before meeting Man Ray in Paris in 1929. Inspired by his work, Miller began creating her own striking surrealist photographs. Later, she became a war photographer for British Vogue and was the only woman in combat photojournalism in Europe during World War II. After the war, she continued a nimble photographic practice, with later work including high-comedy portraits of art-world friends such as Max Ernst, Alfred H. Barr Jr., and Saul Steinberg. – SFMOMA

Mark Borthwick is an amazing experimental fashion photographer but his creative doesn’t stop there. He often accompanies his photographic work with writing, drawings, and even live performances. As a photographer, musician and film maker, his work has a distinct feel of a still capture of a motion reel that you could really only get when you approach your work with this much original diversity. Theres a great interview with him on fecal face.

The lovely photographer Cheyenne Ellis sent us a little call to action this weekend. A project called THE LITTLEST HEROES is a non-profit based organization made up of professional photographers nationwide that provide free photo sessions to children who sometimes feel forgotten because of their illnesses. Their mission is to let them know that they are heroes to many, and to share their inspirational stories and photos with the world.

When i hear the word boombox, i immediately think of the scene in Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing where Radio Raheem’s ghetto blaster runs out of batteries, and he has to go to the corner store to buy “20 D batteries”. Canadian photographer Lyle Owerko is so moved by this electronic icon he decided to make it the subject of a portrait-like study of the influence of the boombox. His visual time line of the boombox captures the transformation of a stereo into what Lyle describes as a form of portable entertainment and expression.

 Jenelle Norris’s book “Polaroid 600 and Spectra Film: Manipulations and Creative Techniques” was set to print the same day Polaroid announced they wouldn’t be making film anymore. 

Her book has been published for free online and now we can do amazing things with those last few polaroids we can get our hands on.

David Emmite was one of the local talent mentioned for his work with Nike. He worked on this beautiful Nike piece with the talented Mr. Michael Shea as creative director and Angelo Colletti and Eric Duvauchelle as art directors, all of whom we’ve had the great pleasure of working with here at Nemo. Congrats!

He certainly depicts a way of visualizing the world through energy perception. The concept and actualization are beautiful and inspirational! 

Day one-

Arrival Day. The camp was sold out 2 months in advance and had a waiting list of 10. The lucky 24 that were able to attend this years session at Mt. Hood and High Cascade Snowboard camp were witness to snowboard history. Snowboarding photog and icon, Bud Fawcett gave the class a history lesson and set the foundation for how snowboarding as we know it today actual started. In many ways, the surf and skateboard industries embrace their heritage. Snowboarding is less historical so it is nice to have Bud to remind us all where we came form as snowboarders. Studionemo is stoked to be a sponsor of the event!

I was checking out the PDN blog this morning and was really sad to see not one, but TWO articles about celebrity baby photos- the ubiquitous Brad and Angelina twins and Jessica Alba’s baby. I guess it spurns the question of whether a blog should adhere to any standards? Of course it depends on the blog, but a blog linked to a respectable photography publication looses points in my book for even discussing paparazzi crap. Am I wrong? 

British artist Muzi Quawson explores the social structures of American culture with color film prints displayed as large light boxes so the cinematic feeling is brought one step father than just the film. One of my favorite things in photography is trying to capture a moment….no kodak moments here…the rawness of life thought the rawness of film. When you successfully capture these moments,they look like one might describe a movie still…it draws you to wonder exactly what that emotion was and why they were feeling it.

Artist Rod Hunting of The Post Family art group, was asked by Save Polaroid to auction of some of his “Polareds” for the cause. 

I guess I’m on a roll with the fashion posts…..watch out Todd! The Row by none other than the Olsen twins believe it or not is pretty awesome. Other than the price tags this line is everything i could want in my closet. Versatile and simple….their images are strong and their promo video is pretty rad too.

Ray is a Portland photographer and long time friend of nemo. He’s been killing it in the photo world over the years and yesterday, nemo finally had the pleasure of working with him. Wish i had more details on how his shoot went other than “they got the shot” and “it was sweltering”. But alas, i was unable to go on location with them. Pictures of that shoot are soon to come but in the mean time check out what hes got on his site.

We may be a bit late on blogging about this (since most of the art has come down already), but it was such a cool idea it’s deserves some credit. I am all for artists being more involved in our metropolitan day to day life. Did anyone see the art around town? 

Bridging communities of cyclists, photographers and artists

We are proud to announce a new event in Portland’s prominent bike culture. Cycle Seen is an exhibition of photographs, artwork and documentation representing the bicycle culture in Metro Portland. This project is a celebration of the bike community through pictures. Portland has an astonishingly diverse and unique community of cyclists ranging from daily commuters to bike performance groups. There are various sub-cultures that make up the dynamic mix of PDX cyclists.

The exhibition includes a combination of materials from invited photographers/artists and images selected from a call for submissions. Photographs and illustrations that represent a snapshot of cycling in PDX over the last two years will be displayed through out the city at various locations during the month of June. The locations will allow an intertwining of communities, artists and cyclists. A bike map/route and location guide is available to at the various locations and by download (pdf).

I’ve been in NYC for the Le Book Connections event. I’ve got lots of photographers and agencies to rant about… but I’ll post in bits to keep you interested. I’ve also got great news to come on NY gallery shows, the lovely Dona and NYC street art. 

Before heading to NY, I shot up north to Connecticut  to visit my lovely Gram. Here’s me and Gram (obviously on an earlier trip, but we found some great old photos that I couldn’t pass up sharing). Highlight of the Grandma trip was definitely water aerobics at the retirement community! 

Kittiwat Unarrom is a Tai artist who has set his sights beyond the usual mediums. He bakes it!! All these severed human body parts are hand made out of bread at his family bakery in Taiwan. MMMMM….

This book called Phone Sex by the photographer Phillip Toledano is just that. Toledano was interested in the self delusion and fantastical worlds that exist between the caller and the operator so he decided to delve into the taboo world of phone sex. His real and personal interactions with these operators has produced a rather interesting book. Check it out.

Cole Barash Is a young photographer breaking the mold of traditional snowboard photography. No stock angles in his portfolio, just raw creativity. Check his new web site definite must see!

Boone Speed does all his own stunts. Portland’s own spirited Boone Speed has been noticed by coolhunting.com His love of climbing is apparent in his work, clearly going the distance for the shot. But it’s not all adventure, his EVANESCENCE work is soft and ethereal and gives him a well rounded aesthetic. 

Make sure to pick up the newest issue of Juxtapoz, great collection of photographes from 60 photographers. Too many great photogs to mention but a few include: Peter Beste, Alex Prager, Ricky Powell, Amy Stein and Corey Arnold. Again go out and buy it!

American Photo Magazine calls Amy Stein one of the top 15 emerging photographers in the United States. With her latest series, “domesticated“, she says the photos serve as modern dioramas of our new natural history, exploring our paradoxical relationship with the “wild”. She also mentions the photographs are constructed based on oral histories and newspaper stories of both intentional and unintentional encounters between humans and wild animals set in a small town in PA bordering a state forest.

Nemo’s photo team took a little field trip yesterday to the opening of the Roger Ballen show, at Quality Pictures. A PhD in Geology led him to South Africa, where he began taking photographs of rural disenfranchised Afrikaners.  His work is beautiful, disturbing, darkly humorous, and sad. I think good art makes you feel…happy, sad, uncomfortable, etc. In Ballen’s work discomfort is a primary emotion. You can’t escape the looming question of exploitation and ethics, which in a way, makes his art even more engaging. Does his work spur awareness and action, or is it art for art’s sake- we look, feel and look away? 

It was hard to choose just one image from NYC based photographer “Boogie” for this post. Every image on his site tells such a story about the subjects day to day life, it truly is fascinating. Click here to see more.

Adobe is synonymous with software, but hardware? It’s still in testing stages but Adobe has created a lens that takes 19 different images in a single shot. But what do you get with 19 simultaneous images? 19 depths of field! Along with the software that will come with the lens, you will be able to “paint in” your range(s) of focus. I had a chance to catch up with my buddy Vincent Skoglund. He recently reworked his website and you can see it here.

I see in your “BIO” section of your website you have entered your bio as “When not traveling, Vincent Skoglund lives in Stockholm, Sweden” I was hoping to get more of a background story about you. Where you grew up, things you were interested in as a kid, the first time you got busted by the cops, the first time you picked up a camera and decided in that moment you wanted to be a photographer.

I grew up in Falun about 2 hrs north of Stockholm on the countryside. I was, as a kid really interesting in drawing and painting. I also remeber that I wanted to be a boss or an artist when I grew up. I guess that being a self-employed photographer that is as close as I can get. I got busted by the cops when I did my first graffiti on a wall in a parking garage. There was only one window of a flat that could see us. That one flat hosed the chief of police in falun. So 3 cop cars busted us. That was pretty much it for my short-lived graffiti career.

Snowboarding has been a big part of your career. Could you make a connection to how snowboarding has help you evolve as a photographer?

Most of all Snowboarding has been a fantastic way of learning about people, the world and life in general. All the travels and new discoveries. This is what has had the biggest impact on me. Photography-wise, shooting as much as I did when I did snowboarding full time was really what made me evolve. I started young so it was like a life school. Also the commisions from snowboarding companies was so loose there was so much room to be creative. The brief would be like “Vincent, we love your photography just keep doing it”. It was also open for any type of photography, portraits, landscapes, action, life…

In the past 10 years, what would you say has been your most memorable snowboard trip/ shoot?

2 years ago I had a funny and hectic schedule. It was a trip around the world with back to back commitments of very different kinds. Something like this:

1. Paris opening of the Adicolor exhibition. 2 days.

2. Vermont. Shooting, read hunting, Shaun White at the US open. During the pipe contest. For Burton snowboards. 3 days.

3. Whistler, Shooting with Jussi Oksanen and Tadashi Fuse in the Backcountry. A really heavy sled mission since we got a few feet of fresh pow. 6 days.

4. Miami, Shooting tennis with Boris Becker. 2 days.

5. Hong kong, Opening of the adicolor exhibition and press. 3 days.

Adicolor- is an amazing body of work, can you give me a brief explanation of the assignment?

23 different artists around the world got invited to do a shoe and a tracksuit each based on a color. On a 6 week trip around the world I went to meet most of the artists involved in the adicolor project. It turned out to be a fantastic trip of inspiration and great people. Meeting the artists in the places were they work and were they get their inspiration. Since they all have different backgrounds, they have very different ways of being creative, that was great to see. Creativity is the red line that ties everyone together.

The comission from Adidas, was to make my own creative interpretation of the artists, places and the adicolor project in general. Very much a dream job that resulted in little bit more than 100 prints, that got exhibited around the world.

On the WeSC headphone campaign (girls plugged into a pineapple) you are listed as Photographer/ Art Direction. Could explain the new role of Art Director and what it means to you?

It is interesting for me to shoot ideas I am interested in.

The Burton Un-Inc portraits are amazing, the set looks very art directed and I am sure there are some stories here. Can you share a story about the Un – Inc work. (Romain and Gigi with puppies)

Thanks, I worked together with Lance Violette on that shoot. Really fun. We bounced some ideas back an forth a few weeks ahead of the shoot and came up with the night / day concept which is inspired by 60′s music covers and 80′s heavy metal covers. Then all the puppies and kittens shows up as well, with their owners. It was a fun shoot!

I get a feeling there is nothing in the world that scares you physically, mentally or creatively. The Svenska spel work has some amazing post production work, the JC work is a challenge in the lighting and action and Nike and Burton have you on top of a mountain, that I am sure is sketchy. How do you keep focus and creativity? Maybe a comparison between these very different shoots and how they are similar and different.

Lots of times on commercial shoots it is about improving what I got in front of me as much as possible. Making sure the angle, light, composition etc is as good as possible. Of course there is also a thought process before that is very important, to make sure that I do it the right way. I like to get to meet with the art director ahead of the shoot to take the ideas the extra mile and be as good as possible. JC and Svenska spel was well planned ahead of the shoot. With the Nike work we got locations that looked good, then it’s about making it something special. The Burton latest campaign I did for them was with a very snap / reportage approach. That was so much fun. Being in the right place at the right time. Try to get moments that convey the great and fun things about snowboarding.

It is funny how Art Buyers may put a shooter into a category. Categories may include Portrait, Lifestyle, Fashion and Editorial. In a good way I have no way of stereotyping your work, you pull it all off so well! When you think of your work and where you are heading, can you categorize yourself? What interests you in all these types of photography?

I am not really interested in categorizing myself. I like the idea that it is not so much about what you shoot as to how you approach it and how it feels when you look at it.

I hate to do the cliché question but I think it is still a good one for you, when you think of the future, 5 years, 10 years down the road, where do you see yourself going?

I am currently working on a few different personal projects. Having the first of the second solo exhibition with the series “Lightyears” in a few weeks. This exhibition will go from there on some kind of tour. A group show at the Art Basel in NYC as well, with prints from the “Lightyears” series. I am in also putting together a book about the snowboarding life and the people around it. Looking at what interests me at the moment I think I will be doing lots more series that will evolve from the “Lightyears” series. I will become more personal with my work as well.

Baryshnikov’s newest incarnation is as a Photographer. Yes, I am talking about that Baryshnikov. Twinkle toes, White Nights star, Russian renaissance man.  Have I given away my affinity for him? He was just in Portland last year for a performance at Pica’s TBA festival. I was this close to seeing him live, but had to give away my ticket and go out of town on short notice. I may never get a chance to see him dance, but now I have the opportunity to see his photography of dance. For his latest project, Mikael Baryshnikov worked with choreographer Merce Cunningham taking photographs of his troupe. The photos are beautiful, conveying emotion, color and movement. When did you begin shooting photos?My first experience with a camera was around 15 years old. I tried to shoot pictures of my friends skateboarding with my mother’s Canon AE-1. My dad was pissed that she let me use it. I didn’t get serious about it until ’97. Hell, I’m not sure if I’m even serious about it now.

Was it love at first snap?I get obsessed with things I’m not good at. It was less about love and more about determination. A friend once told me that the best part of anything is being good at it. I’m not sure if I agree with that 100% but now that I’m reasonably certain I have all the essential technical aspects of photography figured out it’s really fun to try and push the button on the outside of the box.

What crews did you run with in your “early days”?

Well, when I was still learning how to click lenses on in central Pennsylvania I ran with Shawn Durst and the Western New York crew. Once I made it up to Vermont I was fortunate to meet the guys that I still regularly shoot today: Kyle Clancy, Danny Kass, Zach Leach, Colin Langlois, Shane Flood were staples for me. Those guys brought me into this mess and I definitely owe my career to them.

What about snow-sport photography makes you drive countless miles, hop endless red-eye flights around the globe, regularly risk frostbite, and live out of a suitcase for a better part of the year?

I think it’s the fact that I don’t get bored with snowboarding. I’m never satisfied with anything I shoot and I will go to great lengths to try and do new things, try new techniques and see new places as much as I possibly can until the end of my days. If continuing to do that requires the sacrifices of travel then so be it. Snowboard photography is so much more than just action. It’s such a challenge to convey what it’s like to really BE a snowboarder. I can’t imagine what it’s like for the guys that come up with their “style” and stick with it for an entire career. Snowboarding is constantly changing and evolving and I like to think I go with its flow.

What/Who influences your photography?

For the most part it’s rider talent, terrain and weather. I’m lucky enough to be able to work with the best snowboarders in the world and what they do is so inspiring that I feel the need to make the best photos I possibly can to do them justice.Outside that I really enjoy the work of Andreas Gursky & Martin Parr. I’ve been fortunate to have some solid mentors in my life as well. Gary Land was a big influence on me when I was still back East and Trevor Graves continues to inspire me with the direction he’s taken NEMO.

Is film still in your photo arsenal?

I haven’t shot a single frame of film in over two years. I respect film shooters but it’s just not something I need to go back to. I spent a lot of time figuring out how to re-create all my favorite film “looks” with digital capture and I like to think I’ve moved past that and I’m more interested in working with the amazing range of tones you get out of a RAW file. It’s like magic when you start digging into your files.

Are you gluten intolerant?

No, I’m fairly tolerant of all foods except sushi.

When will you drop the snow gig and head to the beaches to shoot surfers in between your mai-tai’s and bikini babes?

The problem is that I wouldn’t be satisfied on the beach. It wouldn’t be long until I’m dragging out homemade water housings into the surf and hiring assistants to hold up my flashes. I’m all about making my life as complicated as possible. There’ll be plenty of time to relax when I’m dead.

Visualize yourself as a rapper, any shout out’s?

How about if I just say thanks instead of giving a “shout-out.”So, thanks to anyone I’ve met. Inspiration accumulates and manifests itself in the influences from every person and place I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and seeing. You’re all appreciated.

Darri Lorenzen was born in Reykjavik, Iceland and currently lives and works in Berlin. His work emphasizes spatial relations… people in context of a geography, they are often empty and dislocating in nature. It makes me think of the body as a shell, a space within a space. hh

Marnie Weber is a multi-media/faceted/talented artist from Los Angeles. She creates photo collages that have a surrealist slant; images that are at once compelling and disturbing. You might recognize her work from Sonic Youth, A Thousand Leaves album. The white face reminds me of Japanese Noh masks that are made to represent, women, children, supernatural beings, heros, devils, or ghosts.

Johanna Reed’s work is different from Weber’s. She paints found images, often highlighting the foreground or background, which in turn can erase or highlight the context of the image.

I’m much more interested in Weber’s work, but I think they are both good examples that expand our view of photography today.

I love this photograph by Kurt Iswarienko. I just watched David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises (my new favorite film) again last night and it made me think of this amazing photo of Viggo Mortensen. It has a distinct cinematic quality to it.

I had the pleasure of going to the Michael Cogliantry opening last night and wanted to share some of the experience. The show was hosted at a relatively new art/music space in pdx called Rererato, around 42nd and Killingsworth. The artists that run the space, Adam Keller and Stephanie Simek, moved to Portland from New Jersey about 6 months ago and from the looks of their myspace page they are more connected in the indie art scene than any old timer in Portland I know. Keep your eye on them; I feel great things to come in the future.
Adam was a close friend of Michael’s in college and subsequently became the subject of many portraits, most notably the disgruntled bellboy (as seen here-http://www.womenshealthmag.com/you-and-improved/tips-for-booking-a-hotel-room).

The highlight of last night’s event -besides the amazing photography, of course- was the white linen suit on display that Michael wore every single day of his travels through India. As witnessed in his photographs, the suit drove approx. 2,000 km in a motorized rickshaw, hiked through a banana plantation, climbed out of a giant dirt hole and suffered the wrath of some delicious dal. Needless to say, the end result is a slightly less white (aka brown) and smelly suit. Michael mentioned to me that towards the end of the trip he was a little embarrassed walking into a hotel with it on. Lucky for me, the suit’s smell was covered by copious amounts of Nag Champa at last night’s festivities. Sadly, I don’t have a photo of the suit from the exhibit.

From Portland, Michael is heading to Nome, Alaska for his next project. Nome is an old gold rush town and the closest US town to Russia. Speculatively, the name came from a misspelling on an old map that beckoned for a town as yet un-”NAME”-ed. Michael told me he’s thinking snowscapes and bar scenes for his next project and noted that his contact in AK offered up helicopters and sled dogs. I can’t wait!
