Mickey Smith’s video is the first entry to this competition, and I think after seeing it, most will agree it will be a hard one to beat. Shot in super 16mm film, as well as groundbreaking work with Canon’s 5D mkII, Smith’s documentary/monologue along with some stunning shots throw us into the harsh world of surf photography in Ireland and the UK, a surprisingly up-and-coming locale for action sports.

When i hear the word paparazzi dont exactly think, “now theres a real artist.” That invasion of privacy the paparazzi conduct every day, is cheap and wrong in my book. However, director Leon Gast may give me another perspective on the paparazzi in his new movie “Smash His Camera“.

It is about the infamious paparazzo Ron Galella, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis sued him, Marlon Brando broke his jaw and Steve McQueen gave him a look that would have killed, if looks could kill. To the celebrities he pursued, photographer Ron Galella was the beast who threatened beauty. As it turned out, he gave them a strange and lasting beauty they might never have known without him. Inherent in the story of this notorious paparazzo are the complex issues of the right to privacy, freedom of the press and the ever-growing vortex of celebrity worship. He sneaked around and invaded and bribed and held up his camera and shot till he dropped (or someone dropped him). His was the artistry of the sniper. Yet Galella found something essential in his real-life subjects, and he gave it permanence.

Out on July 30th this movie looks pretty rad.

Our newest photo crew member, my new personal confidant and pop culture master, Jordan Lutes just sent me this still life photogo’s site. That’s quite the lengthy title but it suits the length and depth of his career. The other day i received word that Chris Brunkhart has made his goal of raising 5,000 dollars to publish his book.

“I have been photographing for over 25 years. Starting my career at a newspaper in Chicago and eventually found my home in Portland. Around 1991 I got involved in snowboarding in its infancy. Becoming a senior photographer for Snowboarder and Transworld magazines, I shot with Craig Kelly, Jamie Lynn Terje Haakonsen and Matt Donahue and host of others from all around the world.

I have seen 6 continents, finding the beauty not only in the mountains but in the people I’ve met, the cities I’ve visited and the culture I’ve encountered. I helped found The Movement Snowboards and Frequency magazine. In 1996 I published “The Creedle Chronicles” with Volcom, and 3 years later released the cult snowboard movie, “The Walrus Dreams.” Currently working on my book, “How Many Dreams In the Dark?” to be released this fall, and continuing to shoot near my home in Sandpoint, Idaho.”

The book is going to print in 3 weeks so keep an eye out and get yourself a piece of snowboard history. In the meantime check out Transworld Snowboarding’s interview with him.

Heres a quick interview I conducted digitally with the young and talented Jordan Lutes who happens to be sitting in his posturepedic computering chair about 4 ft to my right…aaah technology. George Orwell called it….who needs to speak when we can just i chat!

But the story is, I snatched up this young man from Cali the day he graduated from Cal Poly and managed to sweet talk him into moving up north to continuously clean up the whirlwind of mess that is left behind as we power through shoot after shoot. He’s been here a few short weeks and I already don’t know what i ever did without him. *shout out to Jordan’s parents….he’s killing it.

So Jordan, first things first, have you ever buried anything?

No. What a creepy question.

Really nothing at all? Weird, i bury stuff all the time.

Really?

Of course, i thought everyone did! Ok here’s one every guy has a messed up answer to…Best fireworks story?

Two years ago I was in Pamplona, Spain for the running of the bulls. We figured the festival was small, and were completely overwhelmed when we got off the bus into a chaotic town. We’d had a pretty shit trip so far: no surf, rain everyday, missed our train from Paris, and no word from our contact in Spain. But just as we’d pretty much given up, a giant bang goes off, and an insane fireworks show starts shooting out of the town moat right next to us. The Spanish weren’t too impressed, but we were stoked, it ended up being a crazy night.

*side note: a kid got gored by a bull the day after we ran.

See i called it! Messed up!!!! Wait you actually ran?!

That’s a long story consisting of bulls, booze, no sleep, cops and combat boots. We’ll save that story for a later date.

I can’t wait to hear…next question. What moment in history would you want to shoot, and why?

Can I say dinosaurs? Put me in one of those jeeps from Jurassic park and I’d be happy.

Well, then this question seems to pale in comparison to dinosaurs and Jurassic Park: but who are your favorite photographers and why?

Anyone that can really capture youth in motion. Dewey Nicks and Embry Rucker were the first guys to really get me inspired and amped to get into surf lifestyle, they could really make it all look like a paradise. Neil Krug nails the whole expired film thing. Same goes for Ryan Tatar, dude can tell a story with a single Polaroid better than anyone else. Steve Sherman and Jack English’s black and white portraits were iconic to me- there’s a shot of Donovan that I’ve had taped to my wall since before I could surf.

I concur, all amazing lensmen. Now, on to a more pressing question what’s more important, wind or lettuce?

My two worst enemies. But I guess no wind equals no waves.

Excellent deduction my young friend “All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I’m fine.”! Finally the greatest question of them all, how did you learn about Nemo?

Originally from the credits in Afterbang back in like 2002. Eight years later, I’m getting ready to graduate from Cal Poly and saw a piece in PDN about Nemo. Noticed they were shooting a lot of stuff that I liked for a lot of clients that I liked. So I sent Kari Rowe an email, just to see what the studio was all about. A few weeks later I picked up a 5mm hooded wetsuit and got up to Portland to be the new photo intern.

I had the lovely opportunity to meet with this talented and driven young man last week. Unfortunately for me, his stories stuck more readily in my scattered brain than his pictures…so now, a week later i have a hot minute to peruse his website and it only took seconds to recalled a few of my favorite shots. “A skydiver has pulled off an astonishing stunt by climbing out of a glider’s cockpit, crawling along the wing and then somersaulting underneath and stepping onto the wing of a second glider flying below.

Paul Steiner then moves back onto the main fuselage of the second glider while the first glider turns upside down and flies overhead so that he can reach up and hold the tail fin at 100mph, forming a human link between the two aircraft. He then leaps off and parachutes back to the ground.

The spectacular stunt, captured on YouTube, was carried out by the Red Bull skydive team 2,100 metres above the mountains in Styria, Austria. And they look mightily relieved as they returned to their airfield.”

Take the 1971 Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, set it at the enigmatic headquarters of the world’s most famous skateboard conglomerate, imbue it with the off-kilter humour of Wes Anderson and the fantastical surrealism of Terry Gilliam and Michel Gondry, and you have Machotaildrop.

Walter Rhum dreams of escaping his boring, small town existence and becoming a professional skateboarder. He sends a golden highlight reel to the world-famous Machotaildrop skateboard company and is chosen to come to their headquarters, a remote country estate with a half-pipe sitting on a lake, to study under its eccentric leader, The Baron, and ride alongside his idol, Blair Stanley. At first, everything seems normal for Walter. He has his own room, is fed roast goose in bed, provided with a custom wardrobe and groomed for stardom. His bashful personality is a hit, launching his new signature skateboard to massive sales.

NemoHQ Presents: Undertow: Testing The Waters

Portland, Ore – May 18, 2010 – NemoHQ is proud to present the work of local artists, Undertow in “Testing The Waters,” curated by NEMO opening Friday, June 4, 2010 6-10 pm. The show will run through Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at NemoHQ – 1875 SE Belmont Street in Portland, OR.

“Testing The Waters” is the debut art show for three best friends and former college classmates who share the same passion for art, design, and ground beef tacos. Since moving to Portland a little over two years ago, all three artists have collaborated to create an art collective that serves as a creative outlet for their graphic style and subject matter. That art collective became Undertow: three aquatic-based creatures that are visual representations of each artist’s personalities and interests. The art and design in “Testing The Waters” features not only the experiences, inspirations, and commentary of the artists, but also a collaboration with the Jordan Brand to give back to a local charity. 100% of the proceeds for select pieces will be matched by the Jordan Brand and donated to St. Mary’s Boys Home.

Artist Statement:
About Toyhippo: Undertow’s only freshwater creature is Toyhippo. The art surrounding Toyhippo is mostly drawn from life experiences and encounters. His expression reveals his quirky, silly, and sometimes perplexed personality. Although colorful and friendly, he also tends to get rather handsy after a couple long islands, especially in the company of lady wildebeests.

About Ohb:
Ohb is Undertow’s deepest lurking and most mysterious creature. His art is centered around not only his secretive nature, but includes a fusion with other inspirational and iconic land creatures (humans). Ohb can be a little too intense at times, but everyone seems to get along with him fine as long as he washes his tentacles after emitting ink. He does have a bit of a temper. We are helping him work on that.

About Whalington:
Finally, Undertow’s rarest creature is Whalington. The subject of Whalington’s art is his scarce and endangered condition, which often displays threats to his well-being, as he is the only one left of his kind. Though he appears aloof, he is merely a sensitive chap who just needs a little encouragement. Frankly, we could all do without his passive aggressiveness. Don’t mention the overbite as confidence is already an issue here.

The night also marks the release of Free Life Journal – Entry two -Building, a new publication documenting the construction of the structure. Produced in collaboration with the independent publishing house Container Corps.

The sport of cycling is one for all. The professional sport of cycling is one for a select few. By invite only, you have to prove your worth on the roads to share with the PRO peloton. The Tour of California, the premier stage race in the USA, attracts the highest level of riders from that PRO peloton. And then there is us.

We are an enthusiastic group of cyclists who have come from various endeavors to focus and share our passion for riding bikes. Not to be told where, with whom, or what we can ride, we enjoy the challenges associated with doing what we feel. Crashing the course of the 2009 Tour of California was such a challenge. 9 Days, 700 Miles, one gear ratio at a time.

The show presented along Arkitip and Incase is a summation of the time we spent on our bikes. Artifacts and documentation of the events and effort put into such a pleasurable feat are on display to show a glimpse of what it is like to challenge yourself and the machines we ride.

“The Anguish of Chernobyl”, a look at Jim Krantz’s documentary project in the “Forbidden Zone” and the village” inhabitants occupying the forgotten and overlooked world they survive in.

A stunningly beautiful essay by Photographer Jim Krantz. For those of you unfamiliar with the Chernobyl disaster, it was what is considered one of the worlds worst nuclear power plant accidents. Back in 1986, there was a reactor meltdown and the power plant caught fire which sent a plume of nuclear smoke over large parts of Northern, Southern and Eastern Europe as well as the Soviet Union. 60% of the fall out landed in Belarus. As you can imagine this caused a major evacuation and deterioration of the civilization. Chernobyl Ukraine is now considered one of the most radioactive places on the planet.

Although the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and certain limited areas remain off limits, the majority of affected areas are now considered safe for settlement and economic activity, however due to the fear of exposure those areas remain nearly desolate.

Poster Boy is a New York City based street artist. By using a razor, Poster Boy slices up advertisements in the subway system to create completely original works of art. Due to the illegal nature of his work, Poster Boy remains anonymous. Well, anonymous until the recent events involving the young artist being sentenced to nearly a year in prison! Read more on the scorned judge who passed this rediculious verdict! Come on! I cant believe its a crime to make harmless art and have some fun with our surroundings by reconstructing the visual stimulants that are constantly forced upon us!

Its that time of year again! When the sun starts to peak out, the rain slows and the snow starts to disappear….well most of the snow. Those of us who live in the great state of Oregon are lucky enough to have the glacier. That’s right, Timberline‘s own summer snowy play zone!

To make the summers up there even more amazing, there is High Cascade Snowboard Camp. A camp strategically nestled in a tiny mountain town a mere 10 min from the glacier; created for the active souls who just don’t want to stop riding even when its 73 and sunny. Every year they collaborate with Snowboard Photo Legend and founder of Nemo, Trevor Graves to form the most amazingly fun and educational snowboard photography class EVER!

This year anyone who comes to the photo camp will be schooled by the photo genius of Mr Andy Wright, Sir Tim Zimmerman, the lovely Christy Chaloux and the tiny wonder Kari Rowe! I have it on good authority that the people behind the class are on a mission to bring in some amazing guest speakers this year…snow photogs from around the world who are at the top of their game. You will leave this class with not only a better knowledge of your camera, and a new mind for business but a whole new network of contacts and riders to kick start your career.

Get your asses down to the Tribeca Film Festival this Saturday to check out an inspiring and incredible documentary, “The Birth of Big Air.” It’s the story of BMX legend Mat Hoffman and his quest to take BMX further than anyone thought possible. It was produced by Dickhouse Entertainment’s Jeff Tremaine, Johnny Knoxville, Spike Jonze, along with Mark Lewman of Nemo.

Two hours before the screening, there are going to be demos and more…the screening is free and open to the public!

So in true photo-nerd form i immediately started searching the web for the best images i could find of these: hairspray laden, leather clad, sexually ambiguous, awe-inspiring, fashion trending, true 80′s hair metal bands.

Here’s a few of my favorites so far. Send me links to the rock images you had plastered in your locker or covering the walls of your room in your teenage years….I’m dying to see more!

Yesterday, I had a meeting with our lovely friend and amazing designer Nubby Twiglet; during which she directed me to a site that I then spent a good portion of my night (i should have spent packing) exploring. They are an amazing letterpress printing company. I promise, after you look at their website you will come up with a reason to work with them!

For you designers who read this blog and are already familiar with the amazing letterpress process, skip this section and just jump to the eye candy that is their website. But for you creative readers who don’t know about letterpress here’s the wikipedia definition so you can become a print master!!

In short, letterpress printing is the old school way to print and emboss amazing pieces. Peruse there site and you will see what i’m talking about.

Our friend and incredible artist, Jonny Fenix is showing in LA. The opening was last Saturday at the 6th street warehouse. Maybe you can still see his work alongside work by Shepard Fairey, Travis Millard, Jason Lee, Tobin Yelland and many more…

THE ART

Snowboarding being the youngest of the core sports (surf, skate,snow) the maturation of the art has prgressed in this show to strat to play along side the older siblings. Mark Gonzales has grown from a pro skateboarder to being a contemporary artist. Snowboarding artist are getting there. Mike Parillo‘s sophistication with his strokes, Michael Jager has been part of the XBox brand building, and Kevin Zacher has branched out of snowboarding to having commercial success as a photographer. I look forward to where Ryno, Lenhardt and Haynes will take their craft.

THE COMMUNITY

Jeff”s be gone for 7 years now and many of the folks in the space never had the pleasure of meeting him. The early memorials of Jeff were with close family and friends. What is so interesting is how the positive energy of that groups love and sincere missing their friend has resonated for years and even into other countries. “Newsweek” writer Ken Auchincloss calls this “event grief,” in which “emotion is the glue that fastens people to an event played out in the papers or on television. Emotions of this sort hardly count as feelings at all; they’re a form of participation. They’re like screams at a pop concert, which don’t signify love or even admiration but just exuberance at being part of the show.” In our often-isolating society, joining others to mourn for a stranger helps people feel connected, part of a larger community and a simple reason for being.

There was a honest sense of community that resonated in the studio, in a small way, bonded the group, just for a few hours. Carpe diem.

In honor of Jeff’s 30th birthday and to raise money for the JLA Memorial Fund, a group of world-renowned photographers and artists, friends of Jeff and of snowboarding have come together to create a unparalleled body of work titled, I AM SNOWBOARDING. View and purchase prints CLICK HERE!

One photographer is paired with one artist to create an original 30” x 40” piece. A photo of Jeff, shot by the photographer, has been enlarged onto archival canvas upon which the artist paints or uses any medium to create a unique collaborative work.

The resulting pieces are one of a kind, the partnerships formed in this project a tribute to the depth of the snowboarding, skateboarding and art communities. Portland’s got its pride with contributions from Jeff Curtes, Tim Zimmerman, Chris Brunkhart, Matt Donahue, Chris Owen, and Trevor Graves.

Reflecting China: Gendered Visions from the Diaspora
Nemo Design is proud to present the work of acclaimed photographers Shen Wei and Jane Tam in Reflecting China: Gendered Visions from the Diaspora. Reflecting China combines work from Shen Wei’s Chinese Sentiment Series with Jane Tam’s Foreigners in Paradise Series. The result is a collection of work that explores issues of Chinese identity, gender, diaspora, cultural memory, imagined communities, longing and belonging. Both artists have been internationally recognized for their work. Shen is the recipient of many awards and was named as one of fifteen in the “new generation of photo pioneers” by American Photo magazine in 2007 as well as, one of the PDN’s “30 New and Emerging Photographers to Watch” in 2008. Jane Tam was awarded with the Emerging Photographer Award at the Pingyao Photography Festival in China.

Reflecting China is part of the community programming for the Portland Art Museum’s China Design Now exhibit. It’s wonderful if you haven’t seen it yet, go.

The work of Pieter Hugo‘s series….RWANDA 2004: VESTIGES OF A GENOCIDE is a collection of haunting images that will stick with you for a lifetime. He shows the heartache, pain and brutality of the genocide without showing the unberible gruesome blood and terror. His images leave the mind to gather the facts we know and make the images stick with us all on a heartwrenching individual level.

Nike just released the official Tunnel Jam video! Don’t know much about this project other than they spent six weeks building this amazing set up in an abandoned tunnel. This video is sick! Some amazing combo tricks, huge transfers and a broken bike frame! Check out the video here at Defgrip!

Hey Kids, check it out, The Athlete Recovery Fund is a group that helps injured action sports athletes (skate, bmx, and fmx). How rad is that! And right now they are teamed up with Ball Park Franks who will donate $1 to the ARF every time you watch this video, so watch it all the way through at least once and help out those in need! Remember many professional action sports athletes do not have health insurance and cannot get it due to their high risk profession.

China Design Now opened this weekend at the PAM. I was lucky to see a preview of the show last week and it was incredible. Here is a little bit about it… 

China Design Now is an immersive, multi-sensory exploration of the graphic design, fashion, interior design, and architecture emerging from China today. By focusing on the creative output of three distinctive cities, China Design Now presents a rapidly changing cultural landscape that is transforming China and our collective definition of urban life.

Our beloved skate and snow shop Exit Real World puts 16 candles on their cake this month! Yes it seems only yesterday i was spending my saturdays loitering at the Salem Exit, pestering Missy and Brad to put on another skate video, while i contemplated  spending my hard earned allowance on some new abec 3 Lucky’s… those were the days. So don’t miss the birthday bash, happening at all three Exit locations this month!

Photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt was sent to photograph Hemingway for the cover of Life Magazine in the 50s in conjunction with the release of “The Old Man and the Sea.”
The photographer later recalled it as one of his most difficult assignments. Hemingway didn’t want to be photographed and felt if he was photographed he should be able to show off his “virile body.” Interestingly, Eisenstaedt insisted he be clothed for the cover and posed him in different portraits with sticks walking up a hill or standing at the top of a ladder. What’s confusing to me is that Eisenstaedt is famous for that candid kissing couple in Times Square and yet his approach to Hemingway was so staged. I wish he would have taken the photos of Hemingway in his ubermasculine virile old self.

If you haven’t already partaken of the festivities the past two days, start now and don’t stop! MFNW is killing it. I saw one of the best shows of my life last night. The Dirty Three played an amazing show. I’m convinced that Warren Ellis, Jim White, and Mick Turner are the holy trinity. It was incredible. I didn’t have my camera so I’m going to share some lovely photos from Green Man blog that capture the ball of energy that is Warren Ellis.

Tonight Pink Mountaintops!!!!!!!!!! I won’t forget the camera.

Conceived by producer Thomas Tull, Guggenheim’s It Might Get Loud follows three legends of the electric guitar—Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), The Edge (U2), and Jack White (White Stripes, The Raconteurs)—concentrating on their personal stories and how each developed their own unique style.

However hard it is to look at…we need to see it. If this isn’t seen then it dosent exist. It needs to exist to make a personal connection to those of us sitting at our desks sipping our morning coffee. I’m not saying there isn’t a boundary being over stepped for the family but its worth it for the world to see what they do so well to ignore. This could have been your loved one. This is the war you support. This is the war you ignore. This is us keeping the peace.

But sometimes what we know isn’t real makes us even a little more interested. I’ve been perusing some fashion photos and found some I actually wanted to share!

Nemo’s one and only Team Meat Omen gears up for another Hood To Coast relay. Sweat, blood, tears… and thats just getting the car decorated. Good luck guys and gals!

I received my new copy of Aperture today and was struck by a series of photographs the presented from Rob Hornstra. The series precipitated from a an article the Dutch photographer read about Russia’s super rich. Horstra traveled to the peripheral towns untouched by such proseperity and explored the limited choices most people in Russia are facing. His rich work captures tensions between past and present amongst a crumbling nationalist landscape.

Two of my co-workers just got back from  Shanghai, and posted some great pictures. Here is my favorite, i love food, but the colors and motion blur are awesome! Thanks Erica and Tricia! To see the rest of their trip click here. Enjoy.

I happened by this phone booth today, and it was just too good to pass up. This took some time and the detail is even more interesting, since it was surly done under the cover of darkness. Can you find the rabid rabbit? If you know where this phone booth is, give yourself a cookie!
