As most of the past 6 years of my life have been spent in the studio shooting product of many sorts, i have always been intrigued and in great awe of those car photographers. Seriously, i thought a helmet was tough! Short of assisting a car photographer it is tough to decipher what is done on set and what is done in post. These behind the scenes shots of cars in studio on core77, shed a wee bit of light on the great mystery of car photography.

Womens Halfpipe Hero Sarah Burke Dies at 29

We can easily say Sarah Burke was one of the sweetest, down to earth, chill girls we have met in the industry. Spending days on end shooting with her was a pleasure indeed. It makes our stomach’s turn and our hearts drop to think that a woman that amazing and talented has been taken from us so early in life. You can read more about her injuries and what caused her death at USA Today Sports.

You will always be remembered Sarah!

Much love and our warmest feelings go out to her family.

What do you think of when someone says Portland Oregon. Well, thanks to the popular show Portlandia you are probably dead on with any Portlandia influenced image that comes to mind…but when you are here in Portland there are 3 things for certain….1. you cannot walk a Portland block without (literally) running into a designer 2. 99.9% of the people you talk to will be heavily over caffeinated and have a tattoo 3. You will become privy to at least 5 art shows you should visit, within in your first 15 mins here.

So in the true spirit of Portland Oregon, Jason Sturgill, the mastermind behind Art is Forever created a nice sandwich comprised of art, designers, the Portland art museum and tattoos. Thanks to my cellmate here at nemo, Jess Gibson, we have some visual stimulation, in the form of video of this tasty design nerd sandwich.

Way to nail the creative process, and make it look cleaner than the standard designers desk Oneighty! Its also nice for the client to be able to see everything that goes into making a project amazing, no its not true, designers don’t just pull your logos out of a magic hat…there is a creative process. Loving that creative process is what makes and awesome designer.

Future (or present) Fossils of Photography By Bughouse

Artists Jeff Klarin and Rebecca Johnson from Los Angeles design studio Bughouse have created some awesome sculptures which are individually hand-cast in cement and then color-stained to bring out the subtleties. Its funny that the title is Future Fossils, because as far as the world of photography in this new year of 2012 and the past 10 for that matter, the sculpted cameras are fossils of a photo generation past.

Kevin Pearce Will Ride Again!

I read this article in the NY Times about kevin getting on a snowboard again and my heart skipped a beat! This boy who was at the top of the snowboard bracket when i met him, and yet still one of the most humble and kind people in the industry, is now going to be stepping back on to a board as man who has overcome hardships many of us cant even imagine.

The new york times stated “For the first time since Pearce’s life-altering accident, he will strap on a snowboard and glide down a mountain. He plans to ride Tuesday afternoon at Breckenridge, Colo., surrounded by friends in the snowboarding community and anyone else who wants to tag along.”

I have to say that alot of the shoots we produce end up in our design department and i dont end up seeing the final results until they are in print of online. Its kind of exciting that way. To wait and see how our vision in the photo department corresponds with their design needs.

A recent example is the nike vision website. GO BOYS! Nice job with the shoot. The images look almost just as we directed and produced. We love it when that happens.

This is the first instillation of what i hope will be many. Tasked with finding fashion forward thinkers in the action industry started with a mere fashion on the street type standard. But faced with the fact that i am no sartorialist, i cant just look at what a person is wearing and not try to figure out the personality behind the garb. I was determined to go deeper.

I began to rack my brain and think of all the athletes i have met and the individual flair they bring to their sponsors and style i couldn’t imagine just documenting what they wore. As far as i am concerned “Name Brands, overpriced items and the hottest new style on the market all pale in comparison to the style brought together by individuals and their personalities.

This monthly essay is one that will strive to capture the real, the raw and the individuals i meet in a new light. Any stereotypes you may have had when first meeting the individual will melt away, confusion will in sue and you will want nothing more than to meet the individual with these fashion forward frame of minds.

The first of these young trendsetters is Caleb Ruecker. A Portland native and a BMX athlete iconic for his personal style, infinite flare and talent for bedazzling even the most plain of nails.

You see him fly by on the street, hop a curb and spin off into the distance, your initial though? “What a Punk” A reaction he has received with a smile for years and happens to be the same reaction I had as he was flying on his bike over a crew of us nemo workers as we enjoyed an afternoon at the loading dock. Once the intimidation and pure awe of his personal style settled in, i got a hold of him, it only took 3 years.We collaborated and talked, gossiped and giggled (yes girls he giggles) talked nails and fashion. Seriously, not the rail ogling, bmx jabber i expected. This is where the shattering of stereotypes idea came into play. I wanted to make a series of fashion essays in which this person who normally appears intimidating and hard would come across calm, collected, complex and the soft man i spent the afternoon in the park. Not the spiked, tattooed, ruecker the hucker that the world knows him as.

To my excitement he agreed. This is the series we created in an afternoon here at studio nemo.

NZ Winter Games

The NZ winter games were awesome….not that i was there, but rather watching from the darkness of my desk.

Aussies killed it again! They dominated the snowboard cross, in both mens and womens, although here in the states we seem to pass over that aspect of the sport and hail all those park/back country riders out there. However, after having worked with these guys i have a new found respect for their talent, drive and attitudes. Here’s a shout out to the rider who slayed the mens snowboard cross competition, Alex Chumpy Pullin! And to the skier who took second in the Freeski Slopestyle, Jossi Wells. Congrats guys!

Hernan Paganini Designing Product Photography

As someone who spends a lot of time in the studio with stylists and product I completely sympathies with the countless hours of folding and throwing, re-folding, creasing and bending to make this still life item feel as if it is moving naturally and perfectly at the same time. A weird way to think about fabric and other interesting textures but its the life of a product photographer and stylist. However difficult it is to make the product hang/fold perfectly, conceptualizing ways to show the product without being on a person or mannequin is the hardest part of the job. Hernan Paganini’s series for Catalogue Magazine takes an awesome and fresh approach to product as still life art. He approached each item as a piece of art itself, then built individual installations per item with colors and textures that reflect and compliment the individual piece resulting in a series both designers and photogrpahers can appreciate!

Something similar can be said about skateboarders only it would go something like this: behind every great skateboarder is a great photographer and/or Filmer. If a trick were to happen and no one were there to photograph or film it in order for you to see it, did it really happen? You ever heard that other cliche, “I’ll believe it when I see it”? I think a skateboarder made that up. Think about everything you’ve seen and were inspired by in skateboarding and I’ll bet you most of it has been through the invention of photography or filmmaking. Throughout the evolution of skateboarding there has always been the photographer and/or filmer right there by the skateboarders side ensuring that whatever happened it would be documented for the world to see. This man is not only one of the sweetest humans we have ever had the joy of working with. He is talented beyond belief and is one of those people who have a passion for shooting that we at nemo admire and can definitely relate to.

He has been working hard on the Nike 6.0 campaigns, hand in hand with nemo’s art director extraordinaire, Steve Hoskins, who also happens to be the mastermind behind Thee Creamery, the artist mind that drives Sweet Cheeks (Hannah Teter’s panties with a purpose). I hear rumor that Josh has won a category in the Communication Arts Photo contest, as well as, the redbull Illume, and is a finalist in the PDN photo annual!

There are a few blogs i like to browse with my coffee in the morning, one in particular inspires me every morning, Design Sponge, there was a certain house under the sneak peek section that caught my eye last week. I didn’t have much time to read into it since my dog was pushing her head under my laptop and whining to go for a walk. But this morning i decided to check out the details of this fabulous place. As i began reading it became immediately apparent, this was Nemo’s friend Greg of clutch camera and Antler&Co! I love seeing the amazing creativity in the homes of those you work with on a daily.

go skateboarding day

Ok, ok i know, I’m a day late here but what can i say…it was go skateboarding day yesterday and the temperatures here in PDX hit a whopping 80! So out we went sweating our way down the streets of PDX. So in honor of the amazing talent of skateboarding heres a little overview of a project we did with converse a little bit ago.

The launch of Converse skater Rune Glifberg’s signature shoe “The Allston” was intended to both introduce Converse Skateboarding to the masses and make it unmistakably clear that Converse Skateboarding and Rune stood for originality and creative disruption. Nemo was briefed to create a scalable campaign, with skate-authenticity being paramount.Nemo collaborated with Converse Skateboarding to develop an inventive, visually arresting campaign that would speak to both core skaters and a mainstream audience. “Seeing is Believing” is what resulted. Combining both new technology with 3D cameras and old technology of dazzle camouflage (utilized in WWI to confuse German U-Boat commanders), we were able to create a totally new visual environment to experience Rune’s awesome lines. These videos coincided with a 3D print campaign published in core skate magazines and thousands of mailers, again, speaking to both core and mainstream audiences. The campaign culminated with a Converse 3D take-over of The Skateboarder Mag and a huge presence at the Summer X Games. Rune even earned the cover of Skateboarder that month.With the help of Nemo’s expertise, and an introduction like that, Converse Skateboarding was welcomed to the skate community with open arms.

Travis rallied around the streets of downtown LA with photographer Peggy Sirota for the fashion piece on the summer’s “daredevil-ish” looks. Always fun/weird to see one of our own action sports athletes get all dressed up like a 9-5′er.

Man is this woman on it. I have a serious photo crush on her work! Food photography is a give and take based on personal taste (*insert laugh here) and is completely dependent on styling and lighting. Anna Williams brings all the elements seamlessly and as it would appear effortlessly together to create this absolutely amazing body of food photography. Then to top it all off she pieces her work together in very unusual ways to create single yet incredibly eye catching dyad.

Nike 6.0 Presents: Leave A Message- A Women’s Surf Film

People can get pretty defensive in the argument of women vs men in sports, but let me assure you, women’s surfing has come a long way. Nike 6.0′s team of female surfers are not only showing up most of the boys, but they seem to be completely re-writing the present and future of women’s surfing. Here at Nemo, we’ve been traveling with, photographing, art directing and supporting most of these girls since the start of 6.0- Kari Rowe was recently down in Mex with Monyca Byrne-Wickey shooting for Sweet Cheeks (big sale at Roozt.com right now!)- and we couldn’t be prouder of the release of their new flick, Leave A Message. Programs start at just $29 a month, and go up from there (photoshop runs $50/month). If you haven’t been able shell out the cash, hate having to upgrade, rarely use it, or haven’t figured out how to steal it by now, this is an awesome option, especially for freelancers who may only need the program every so often for certain clients or jobs. Winter is over in Portland! The sun is coming back out! I’m sure I’ve just completely jinxed the pacific NW with that, but still, it’s exciting be able to go outside again. With longer days and sunnier skies, photographers can get shooting back outdoors again. So here is a great tool for anyone depending on that big ball of fire in the sky to light up their models. Lighttrac is an app for iPad and iPhone that tracks and forecasts the position of the sun according to the shoot location- sunrise, sunset, directional light, time, duration, angle, everything you would need to get the sun where you wanted it without scouting the location days ahead. The app costs $3.99, which is well worth it to impress your friends with your new-found mastery of ambient light.

Chase Jarvis shoots a campaign in 180 seconds

We love Chase Jarvis- he is the master of photo efficiency. Aside from shooting breath-taking photos for some of the worlds biggest brands, he runs a non-stop photo blog, packed with more information than you know what to do with. I recently stumbled upon a video of Chase breaking down everything that goes into an advertising shoot- in under 4 minutes. This video is actually from 2008, but that doesn’t make it any less useful. Pretty impressive how in 180 seconds he shows the 6 major steps to a successful shoot: concepts/contracts/pre-production; travel; scouting; shooting; post-production; and delivery.

Wanna be retro and cool? Of course you do. Everybody these days has a Holga camera, so how do you take that fun to the next level? Throw that cheapo plastic lens on your pro DSLR. Deus Ex Machina- welcome to paradise

Head’s up- if you have any interest in surfboards, classic motorcycles, hand-painted art, custom bicycles, and/or photography, you may become extremely jealous after watching the following video. Deus Ex Machina, aka the “temple of enthusiasm,” is the brainchild of former surf photo legend and current ex-pat Dustin Humphrey. In 2006, Humphrey released Sipping Jetstreams, possibly the most successful and sought after photo book of this generation. In 2007, D. Hump disappeared completely, leaving the editorial surf world wondering where and why. Turns out he was putting all of his attnention into Deus Ex Machina in Bali, Indonesia- a paradise within a paradise. Take a tour of this wonderland in the video below. For further info on D. Advice from the “30 under 30″

PDN‘s latest issue featured their pick of the top 30 photographers in the world who are under 30 years old, a highly coveted list by Nemo’s photo team. While we love seeing their work splashed across the pages, if a photo is worth a thousand words, often it’s more interesting to hear those words. Digging a bit deeper, this secondary article questions these up-and-comers on some their lessons learned throughout their educations. Here’s some highlights:

Katrina D’Autremont-”You never know what will come from showing someone your work. Very often results are not immediate but if you think about it, the best thing someone can say is that your work stuck with them, and that they still remember you months down the line.”
Bartholomew Cooke-”One of the things I’ve done since graduating is to fervently pursue every opportunity given to me. Even if doing so has not always generated the results I hoped for, it almost always opens new doors and is one of the main reasons I have had some success to date.
Liz Hingley-”I feel it is a process of learning and each stage produces a different kind of work. I don’t feel that experience always produces better work. ”
Rachel Barrett-”Diligence and organization are both crucial. It takes constant effort, on a daily basis: updating, filing, retouching, fine-tuning…the trick is to harness them and make them work for you, not against you.”

New Wrangler Campaign is Dangerous

Ad Agency Fred & Farid recently teamed up with photographer Cass Bird for a wild new set of ads for Wrangler jeans. Using professional stunt men (and women), scenes of people crashing though windows, blasted by explosions, and generally beaten and bruised were used to encapsulate the “We Are Animals” campaign. Looks pretty damn fun to me!

Pete Eckert: Award-Winning Blind Photographer

This is pretty amazing. Pete Eckert began going blind while he was in art school, something i could only imagine feeling totally detrimental to any young artist. But amazingly, Eckert persevered. Gaining inspiration from his loss of sight, he picked up his camera again and eventually began creating deeply conceptual photographs. With his guide dog Clancy, Pete was the Grand Prize recipient of Artists Wanted: Exposure 2008, an international photography competition, and was awarded $2,008 with a formal reception at Leo Kesting Gallery in New York City. Watch this short video to take a look into Pete’s world.

I recently came across a photographer’s website that stopped me dead in my tracks. Not because I was so astonished by the work, but because I literally did not know what to do from the homepage. Don’t get me wrong, Kloster Photography‘s work appears quite professional and inspired, but the landing page may have killed the moment. Kids, here’s a quick guide:
-do not use tiles for your contact info, especially when the tiles are misplaced and/or scattered.
-do not use scrolling viewers for your portfolios. Yes, it’s efficient, but its frustrating and non-instinctive. It also leaves no good way for clients and creatives to reference your photos.
-if objects are click-able, make it obvious. If not, don’t.
-do not advertise portfolios or information that are not actually available, or “coming soon.”
-most importantly, do not confuse the viewer. let them in, show them around, keep it simple.

Skatebook VS Twentieth Century FOX

This week, Twentieth Century Fox discovered one of their characters, Bart Simpson, in the pages of our beloved Skatebook. Skatebook is a quarterly hard cover coffee table skateboarding book made possible by Mike Ballard, featuring some of the world’s best skateboard and culture photography. Unfortunately, it looks like Fox is suing Skatebook for depeicting Bartman “shredding skateboarding’s most famous spots.” Most likely this means the end for Ballard and his books. If you’re lucky enough to own one of these books, they’re about to skyrocket in worth! Check out the site and books while you still can.

All aboard the Grease Bus!

With all this snow Mt. Hood has been getting, we’ve all been in snowboard heaven. Anyone noticed a flashy purple bus with “feed me!” written on it cruising around? If you haven’t figured it out, thats the one and only Grease Bus, Portland’s best way up to the mountain. Our friends over at Nike Snowboarding and Salomon Snowboards have been sponsoring these guys since 2001, and we’re pretty stoked on it. Trout + Snowboarding Equals Cover Shot

Scott Serfas, you have officially impressed me. Last May, Serfas and his photo crew headed up to Bear Mountain to create a snowboard photo like no one has seen before. The concept was to get a split view of the surroundings in the Bear Mountain enevironment- the above ground action of snowboarder Lauri Heiskari, and the below water scenery of swiming trout. Seeing as there was no current quarter pipe/lake scenario on the mountain, Serfas decided to build a pond on the deck of the ramp, and give 20 fish a nice little vacation from their lake. Even with all this planning, it is amazing this worked as well as it did, right down to the confused trout staring directly into Serfas’ lens for the cover shot. Check out this behind-the-scenes vid and see the final shot.

Meet 2011 TED winner JR

Hopefully many of you know about TED talks. If not, you have some serious video watching to do. This years winner is a French photographer named JR.

JR broke barriers with his enlightening portraits of rival citizens shown in a humorous and often reassuring way, plastering the billboard sized images in the most affected and torn apart areas around the world. Starting the project in his native France, he quickly realized the power the images had. After this discovery, his team decided to move in to the middle east despite risk of arrest, brutality, or even death. Check out the video below to see JR’s amazing journey.

Swimsuit Cover runs in the Iooss family

The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue hit newsstands last week. Many of you may know of the great Walter Iooss jr., the legendary Sports Illustrated photographer who has amassed 11 covers after shooting for the magazine for numerous decades. But times have changed for Iooss jr., most notably because of his son and fellow photographer, Bjorn.
On a run-of-the mill filler shoot, Bjorn was asked to snap some images of Russian model Irina Shayk (along with a few other models), “purely for advertorial purposes.” A week before the magazine was released, the younger Iooss was informed his shot had made the cover, beating out hundreds of other images from seasoned swimsuit vets, including dear old dad. The stranger part? Shooting swimsuit models is the last thing he planned on shooting. Bjorn considers himself a fine art photographer, claiming he couldn’t care less about sports. “I’ve kind of always tried to do my own thing. To be in this position is a little bit out of my comfort zone.” He seems to be doing just fine to me, especially considering he just schooled his own dad.

They seem to have taken the photos that not only capture the emotion of the moment but also the personality of the artists. 360° Viewer-Controlled Video is Here

In this digital age where we need to know everything that is going on around us all the time, some mediums may feel a little left behind. But video no longer has that problem. A company called NorthStudio360 has devised a way to shoot 360° video by apparently using six video cameras at once, and with their clever video player, you can control where you want to look while the video plays by just clicking and dragging with your mouse. Red Bull did a project like this a few years ago, strapping a a 360 cam to a hemet and towing surfers into teahupoo, but it didnt have anywhere near the customization of this new instrument. Northstudio360 is mostly marketing their device to tourism and travel sites, but I like the potential in the video below- viewer controlled sports, making it more personal than ever.

The guys at F-stoppers never cease to amaze me with with the behind-the-scenes video they manage to find. This one actually comes straight from the editor, Patrick Hall. After getting tired of shooting traditional wakeboarding actions shots in his hometown, and desiring a commercial feel, Hall decided to get intense in studio. Employing a crew of nearly 10 assistants, multiple strobe packs, 5 pro wakeboarders, and an intricate rope system, definitely some impressive images made in the end. Pay attention to how well the models hold their look when the buckets of (probably cold) water are tossed at them!

Yesterday at nemo we celebrated TG’s Birthday. For Mark Lewman‘s birthday TG decided to hire a Bret Michaels impressionist to serenade him. Mark Lewman vowed he would get him back. So he hired “a walk on the wild side” to bring in an 80lbs albino python. They hid it in the bathroom and told Trevor the pipes burst. He goes running down there to document the destruction. But he found more than water!

It goes from 4pm-9:30pm and then the party moves to Beauty Bar, where there will be a few more of Ray’s prints, a badass metal DJ, and of course the beer will be flowing.

Who is Elmo Tide?

Elmo Tide is a photographer. Atleast we think that’s who he is or what he does. Elmo has no website, no professional portfolio, no Facebook, no Twitter. The only proof that Elmo Tide exists is a flickr account that has been updated twice- once in 2008, and once in 2010. Yet somehow his images have shown in photo galleries worldwide. It’s safe to say Elmo Tide is an enigma if anything. His mysterious work shows a world few other people may ever see, his images seem like fantastical movie stills from odd film noirs. Look at his photos for long enough and you’ll feel that you’ve been pulled into to a gritty underground counter-culture, not sure whether you want to run for your life or join the party. Video is cool right now, especially if you’re a photographer. But for those of us who are still stumbling with HDSLR’s and final cut pro, it’s a challenging new occupation. However, Nemo friend Michael Cogliantry (who we’ve chatted about many times before) has the skills to make it all look easy, with hilarity/absurdity to boot. After winning numerous awards for both photo and video, Michael and good friend Greg Carter have formed Semi-Automatic, a dynamic writing and filmmaking team devoted to making some of the most creative videos I’ve seen. Vivian Maier – Her Discovered Work

The work of one Vivian Maier is running rampant across the world wide web, causing me to feel the urgent need to become aquainted with her work myself.

She was a street photographer located in NY and Chicago between the 1960′s and the 1990′s. The purchaser of her work, a guy named John Maloof ended up purchasing around 100,000 negatives of her work — 20,000 of which were still in undeveloped rolls. An amazing and exciting process has begun, and John is documenting it thought this blog. Some interesting and inspirational stuff.

New York is a city full of characters. Everyone has their own story, this project by the NY Times is a brief look into the lives of the individuals that make up that colorful community. The commentary from the individuals, sharing their story, the rough black and white imagery, and the grit of the city showing through every story, you are sure to be lost for hours in this site.

Mark Visser’s 2am Tow In At Jaws

What’s the best way to surf by yourself in perfect waves? Surf them in pitch black. Mark Visser may be crazy, but he may also be a genius. Maybe it’s because we love creative lighting. Maybe it’s because we love athletes raising the bar. Either way, you need to check out this video. Using newly developed light technology, Visser was towed into 30-40 foot surf while lighting his own path and remaining visible by helicopter and jet-skis. “The lighting technologies were created especially for the project by Solus Corporation using ground breaking NASA submarine lighting to ensure the wave and board were lit in the right places, at the right time and illuminated the wave without hindering the vision of Visser, the jet ski drivers and the helicopter pilots.”
This ride is the first part of Visser’s “9 Lives” project. Can’t wait to see how he risks the other 8!

As of recently the female to male ration has been heavily weighing towards the XX chromosome and it couldn’t be more beautiful.

The Sartorialist

For those of you who don’t follow The Sartorialist (sar·to·ri·al:of or pertaining to clothing, style or manner of dress), it’s an all-encompassing fashion photo blog, run by Scott Schumann showcasing his street photography in his hometown of NYC and other fashion hubs like Milan, Paris, etc. And for those of you who do already know about and follow this site (70,000 people daily), Schumann’s persona has been relatively hidden until now. Intel recently produced a short documentary piece on the life and times of The Sartorialist. Lady Gaga + Polaroid take us into the future

CES (consumer electronics show) was this week in Las Vegas, and while all the gadget nerds were focused on tablets and such, Polaroid‘s new ambassador Gaga was releasing the latest advancements in instant-image equipment, specifically, these space-age photo glasses. These monstrous sunglasses allow the wearer/shooter to record photo and video of whatever they happen to be looking at (not sure what the memory on them is though), display the images on the exterior of the lens, and export through a usb drive in the earpiece.
another notable piece of polaroid equipment was their pocket-sized wireless instant printer, allowing all of us smart-phone-addicted people to print our phone’s photos on the spot.

Kari Rowe shoots Julian Wilson’s big move to Nike 6.0

Fresh off the press and possibly the biggest move of the year so far, pro surfer Julian Wilson has left surf-industry giant Quiksilver to join the Nike 6.0 team. Julian stopped by Nemo on his way to Nike for a quick photoshoot with our very own photographer extraordinaire Kari Rowe. Check out Kari’s shots in your favorite surf mags in the upcoming month!
