Lee Price: American Figurative

Eerily realistic paintings by this NY painter, draws both a connection to women in America, and disgust that our society greatly distorts our view on body image. With so much pressure on the way we look people become closet eaters, bringers, bulimic, and anorexic. I have never seen this junk food epidemic captured so strongly, after looking through her site you gain a strong connection to the woman in the paintings and feel for her and the comfort she gets from junk food. Take a deeper look at her work here. Disclaimer: this site contains nude content.

Sexist or just plain Sexy?

Big buzz of this photo making its rounds on the internet. People are up in arms, blah blah, saying this photo is sexist. I think of it as more distraction from actual issues that the “McPalin” team are not exactly facing head on. But really folks, who cares about politics when you have Miss Alaska ’84’s “gams” to look at? AUUUUUGGGAAAAA!

p.s. 5 bucks says the kid in the photo is more worried about the inflation in his pants than the market.

Behind the Lens with Tim Zimmerman

Cheesy headline aside, Zimmerman is legit. You can find him traveling almost non-stop for a better part of the year, making some of the most amazing images to hit the pages of many snowboard publications. Let’s take a minute to see whats going on in his head…

When did you begin shooting photos? My first experience with a camera was around 15 years old. I tried to shoot pictures of my friends skateboarding with my mother’s Canon AE-1. My dad was pissed that she let me use it. I didn’t get serious about it until ’97. Hell, I’m not sure if I’m even serious about it now.

Was it love at first snap? (more…)

Herb Ritz

Herb Ritz

Herb Ritts is dead.
I stared across the table at Dona and I scrambled through my head to remember where and if I had even heard that. My first reaction was “No Way”. The 90s was filled with his imagery and I never remember him being an old guy per say. Tragically in 2002 on Dec 26th he passed on.

The conversation was about classy sexy imagery. Nude photography as an art form and differentiating plastic boobs and low budget porn was critical to the thinking. This brainstorm about photographers and their unique approaches to the subject lead to Herb’s “Wicked Game” video with Helena Christensen. He had clean lines and was able to keep the subject strong in all the work he presented. The film and the camera nor any technical wizardry was Herb’s signature to the work. You could feel that all his subjects were somehow emotional connected to Herb and in this creation process a trust was built. This sincerity became part of the strong lines and clean lighting to be a signature.

The memory of his work today was a testament to the work he created, His untimely death in many ways has immortalized the work.
