Chris Burkard wins Red Bull Illume 2010

The Red Bull Illume image quest (the world’s premier action and adventure sports photography competition) just went down in Dublin last night. 4,773 photographers from 112 countries, 22,764 submitted photos, all showcasing their love and dedication to action sports. After nearly 6 months of sifting through photos, the 50 finalists were unveiled on August 31 at a spectacular ceremony in Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. And at the end of the night, central California’s surf-photographer-extraordinaire Chris Burkard and his image of Pete Mendia riding refracting waves in Chile walked away with the grand prize: a Leica S2 camera worth €30.000 (roughly $38,000!)

Red Bull will also be releasing the Illume Photobook 2010, a record of their quest. The top 250 images have been published in high-quality hardback and will be available soon for purchase for fans of these stunning, breathtaking images.
To check out all the other insane finalist images, head over to Red Bull Illume

Mickey Smith- The Dark Side of the Lens

This video popped up on surfline.com about a week ago, and since then has earned a lot of attention all over the web. The video is apart of Relentless Energy’s Short Stories competition, “a challenge to filmmakers around the world to explore, reveal, celebrate and define NO HALF MEASURES through the medium of film.”

Mickey Smith’s video is the first entry to this competition, and I think after seeing it, most will agree it will be a hard one to beat. Shot in super 16mm film, as well as groundbreaking work with Canon’s 5D mkII, Smith’s documentary/monologue along with some stunning shots throw us into the harsh world of surf photography in Ireland and the UK, a surprisingly up-and-coming locale for action sports.

Nike just released the official Tunnel Jam video! Don’t know much about this project other than they spent six weeks building this amazing set up in an abandoned tunnel. This video is sick! Some amazing combo tricks, huge transfers and a broken bike frame! Check out the video here at Defgrip!

Athlete Recovery Fund

arf-logo-widget1

Hey Kids, check it out, The Athlete Recovery Fund is a group that helps injured action sports athletes (skate, bmx, and fmx). How rad is that! And right now they are teamed up with Ball Park Franks who will donate $1 to the ARF every time you watch this video, so watch it all the way through at least once and help out those in need! Remember many professional action sports athletes do not have health insurance and cannot get it due to their high risk profession.

China Design Now

Picture 3

China Design Now opened this weekend at the PAM. I was lucky to see a preview of the show last week and it was incredible. Here is a little bit about it…

China Design Now is an immersive, multi-sensory exploration of the graphic design, fashion, interior design, and architecture emerging from China today. By focusing on the creative output of three distinctive cities, China Design Now presents a rapidly changing cultural landscape that is transforming China and our collective definition of urban life.

NEMO is super excited to be a part of this event through community programming. We have a fantastic surprise for November’s First Friday show. Save the date for November 4th.  Check out more here… www.chinadesignnowportland.org

I happened by this phone booth today, and it was just too good to pass up. This took some time and the detail is even more interesting, since it was surly done under the cover of darkness. Can you find the rabid rabbit? If you know where this phone booth is, give yourself a cookie!

David Byrne Cycle Enthusiast and Musical Genius

UPDATE: Mr. Byrne will be here in PDX promoting his  book Bicycle Diaries on September 30th at the Bagdad Theatre.

One of my favorite artists of all times, David Byrne, is crossing over genres (which is no surprise, he seems to do it all the time) to curate a fantastic show based on his love of cycling. Unfortunately, his show will not be exhibited in our bicycle loving city, but at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT for its Bike Rides exhibit which opens Sept. 26 and runs through Jan. 3. If you are in CT, enjoy! I hope they chose to exhibit one of those sexy new Globe bikes that I can’t wait to get my hands on… they are a piece of art themselves.

Rethinking the Dutch

Kathy Ryan, the director of photography for The New York Times Magazine (talk about an eye!) curated this month’s show “Dutch Seen: New York Rediscovered,” at the Museum of the City of New York. The work casts a modern gaze upon the historic ties of Colonial Dutch New York and the Dutch masters. Dutch art holds a special place in my heart, as does photography, so imagine my surprise and joy at this show. The variance of light combined with rich textured work and secret glances give works like Hendrik Kerstens’s a nod to the old masters. Yet at the same time, Kerstens’s humor provides a modern twist, as with this photograph “Bag.”Bag by Hendrik Kerstens’s

A flotilla of Nomura jelly fish off the coast of Japan. These jellies have been invading Japanese waters in unheard of numbers over the last few years, scientists don’t yet know why there are so many in waters they do not normally venture.
