The time has finally come for us to hit the road with Free Life Center. Its an exciting time. We have almost three months of
exhibitions planned, that will take us from Vancouver B.C to San Diego with stops all along the way. Its sure to be an amazing journey.
And so it is with complete joy that we invite you and all your friends to the Free Life Center launch party. This magic send off will include the unveiling of the Free Life Center structure, exhibited for the first time in its fully realized form, complete with art, video, color, sound, and love.
The night also marks the release of Free Life Journal – Entry two -Building, a new publication documenting the construction of the structure. Produced in collaboration with the independent publishing house Container Corps.

These shots are from his Istanbul series…and they are seriously breathtaking.

They feature female riders from all walks of life, and never cease to present them with fashionable grace and ease. Making the natural beauty of these ladies glow with their great selection of photography.

Vancouver shop The Boardroom is hosting Aries 2010, helping to launch it alongside the 2010 Winter Olympics with events this past Saturday, 13 February 2010 and next Friday, 19 February 2010, which will both feature presentations by snowboarding legends Terry Kidwell, Dano Pendygrass, Ken Achenbach and Barrett Christy.

Juxtapose Magazine has an article about, “yet another of Nemo Design’s impressive art gatherings.”

Nemo welcomes the Jeff Anderson Memorial show “I Am Snowboarding” to Portland! Over 500 friends came to view the art and listen to DJ JOELSKOOL and  snowboard legends, Jamie Lynn’s band, Kandi Coded.

THE ART

Snowboarding being the youngest of the core sports (surf, skate,snow) the maturation of the art has prgressed in this show to strat to play along side the older siblings. Mark Gonzales has grown from a pro skateboarder to being a contemporary artist. Snowboarding artist are getting there. Mike Parillo‘s sophistication with his strokes, Michael Jager has been part of the XBox brand building, and Kevin Zacher has branched out of snowboarding to having commercial success as a photographer. I look forward to where Ryno, Lenhardt and Haynes will take their craft.

THE COMMUNITY

Jeff”s be gone for 7 years now and many of the folks in the space never had the pleasure of meeting him. The early memorials of Jeff were with close family and friends. What is so interesting is how the positive energy of that groups love and sincere missing their friend has resonated for years and even into other countries. “Newsweek” writer Ken Auchincloss calls this “event grief,” in which “emotion is the glue that fastens people to an event played out in the papers or on television. Emotions of this sort hardly count as feelings at all; they’re a form of participation. They’re like screams at a pop concert, which don’t signify love or even admiration but just exuberance at being part of the show.” In our often-isolating society, joining others to mourn for a stranger helps people feel connected, part of a larger community and a simple reason for being.

There was a honest sense of community that resonated in the studio, in a small way, bonded the group, just for a few hours. Carpe diem.

THE GODFATHER

It is that time again, Live and Direct takes on friday night at Rotture! This month they have a special guest painter Blaine Fontana, it will be a real treat to see him paint live so don’t miss it!

Photographers Shen Wei and Jane Tam are the guest artists in StudioNemo for the month of November. The Friday nigh show went great, and despite the chili weather the house was packed! Check it out!

Reflecting China: Gendered Visions from the Diaspora
Nemo Design is proud to present the work of acclaimed photographers Shen Wei and Jane Tam in Reflecting China: Gendered Visions from the Diaspora. Reflecting China combines work from Shen Wei’s Chinese Sentiment Series with Jane Tam’s Foreigners in Paradise Series. The result is a collection of work that explores issues of Chinese identity, gender, diaspora, cultural memory, imagined communities, longing and belonging. Both artists have been internationally recognized for their work. Shen is the recipient of many awards and was named as one of fifteen in the “new generation of photo pioneers” by American Photo magazine in 2007 as well as, one of the PDN’s “30 New and Emerging Photographers to Watch” in 2008. Jane Tam was awarded with the Emerging Photographer Award at the Pingyao Photography Festival in China.

Reflecting China is part of the community programming for the Portland Art Museum’s China Design Now exhibit. It’s wonderful if you haven’t seen it yet, go.

Nike just released the official Tunnel Jam video! Don’t know much about this project other than they spent six weeks building this amazing set up in an abandoned tunnel. This video is sick! Some amazing combo tricks, huge transfers and a broken bike frame! Check out the video here at Defgrip!

Hey Kids, check it out, The Athlete Recovery Fund is a group that helps injured action sports athletes (skate, bmx, and fmx). How rad is that! And right now they are teamed up with Ball Park Franks who will donate $1 to the ARF every time you watch this video, so watch it all the way through at least once and help out those in need! Remember many professional action sports athletes do not have health insurance and cannot get it due to their high risk profession.

China Design Now opened this weekend at the PAM. I was lucky to see a preview of the show last week and it was incredible. Here is a little bit about it… 

China Design Now is an immersive, multi-sensory exploration of the graphic design, fashion, interior design, and architecture emerging from China today. By focusing on the creative output of three distinctive cities, China Design Now presents a rapidly changing cultural landscape that is transforming China and our collective definition of urban life.

Photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt was sent to photograph Hemingway for the cover of Life Magazine in the 50s in conjunction with the release of “The Old Man and the Sea.”
The photographer later recalled it as one of his most difficult assignments. Hemingway didn’t want to be photographed and felt if he was photographed he should be able to show off his “virile body.” Interestingly, Eisenstaedt insisted he be clothed for the cover and posed him in different portraits with sticks walking up a hill or standing at the top of a ladder. What’s confusing to me is that Eisenstaedt is famous for that candid kissing couple in Times Square and yet his approach to Hemingway was so staged. I wish he would have taken the photos of Hemingway in his ubermasculine virile old self.

I happened by this phone booth today, and it was just too good to pass up. This took some time and the detail is even more interesting, since it was surly done under the cover of darkness. Can you find the rabid rabbit? If you know where this phone booth is, give yourself a cookie!

One of my favorite artists of all times, David Byrne, is crossing over genres (which is no surprise, he seems to do it all the time) to curate a fantastic show based on his love of cycling. Unfortunately, his show will not be exhibited in our bicycle loving city, but at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT for its Bike Rides exhibit which opens Sept. 26 and runs through Jan. 3. If you are in CT, enjoy! I hope they chose to exhibit one of those sexy new Globe bikes that I can’t wait to get my hands on… they are a piece of art themselves.

Beth Lesser is photographer and author who followed the birth and rise of the Jamaican dance hall movement in the 80′s. It is now a culture that spreads from the banks of Kingston to the streets of Tokyo. She published a book on the subject  “Dancehall the rise of Jamaican dancehall culture” which is full of many beautiful photos, check it out!

With the gentrification of seedy neighborhoods on the rise, the release of Watanabe Katsumi’s book Gangs of Kabukicho, serves as a visual record of Shinjuku’s red light district.  The photographs are from the 1960s and 70s and capture characters of violence, sex and transgression. Watanabe died last year at the age of 67. This book is a testament to his incredible ability to capture subtlety.

So for the past 10 days I’ve been in Anchorage, AK shooting photos w/ the Think Thank crew. Everything Started out great, perfect weather, hiking everyday, stacking shots, safe to say everyone was killing it. About half way through I get word Mt. Reboubt, an active volcano 100 some miles from Anchorage has erupted, no biggy just ash that wont hit town. Skip ahead a few days, we’re staying low in our hiking zone due to avalanche dangers from the 4 feet it dumped days before. Everything seemed perfect, blue skies, sunshine, and a sweet jump ready to go. Sam Hulbert is up first to test the jump shortly after he goes, someone yells holy S**T look! Massive fast moving ash ploom high in the atmosphere is headed right for us, all of the sudden it completely blocks out the sun, it had to have dropped 20+ degrees and now all the light was flat, no fun to shoot in. Soon after it passes, and watching the ash ploom, it heads right for Anchorage… this is not good as I’m supposed to leave the next day. Airports shut down multiple flights are canceled and over 1200 ppl are stuck just at the airport. This ultimately means I’m screwed as far as my flight goes. Now it’s Monday morning, my flight got pushed back to early Tuesday morn, volcano is still blowing ash and I’m just hoping it doesn’t come into Anchorage’s airspace again. Airplanes tend to fall out of the sky when they encounter ash, not good! So their is my sob story, blah blah, here are some pictures. Enjoy! When you travel it is hard to explain what it means to be part of the Portland community. Rip City is a great representation of how a skater in PDX might live. Artistic insight to the filming, editing and sound all make an experience that even make a place like Donald Oregon seem livable.

Rip City also has a kind of day-in-the-life feel to it, which, I think works really well. It reminds me a bit of the 2007 surf documentary, One California Day, in that in that it uses the stories of individuals to convey the bigger picture of what’s collectively going on. Chet Childress’ morning skate through the neighborhood, Sage Bolyard and Mark Red Scott’s Dreamland Skateparks segment, and Chris Nukala’s “toxic waste” project all seem to be happening at the same time and together with other parts define the core skate scene in Portland.

In the end, Rip City is like a painting, or rather a dual portrait of both Portland skater and Portland skating. It’s also an inspirational piece, although it differs from others like it. If a team skate video is like a candy bar as far as stoke factor goes, then Rip City is like a pasta dinner. The former might be appropriate as motivation for a quick session, but the latter is what you really need for long-term nourishment. Check it nice.

I’ll give ya the quick and dirty, this was one of my more favorite freelance photo shoots to date, It may have been due to the surprising openness of everyone involved to G.S.D. no matter what! All the girls were awesome and open to suggestion and copped zero attitude, I know some male riders that are more high maintenance to deal with compared to any of these girls. Ha. Nikita has a solid group of riders, killing it from the pow, park, pipe, streets and their focused. Special props go to Nikita office crew that absolutely killed everything from buying large amounts of avocados and string cheese daily to keep the small army shredding to putting a roof over our heads. I like to think I came out of this trip with everything I set to accomplish and like 20+ new friends I can’t wait to run into in the near future. I just came home from the Von Iva show at Doug Fir, and this sunday night show was fire! Those three girls put on an amazingly energetic show and the crowd was no let down! Keyboardist Rebecca Kupersmith was really stoked on the poster i did for the show (props for Nemo!) and once that trio got on stage is was loud, fast and personal. Kelly was throwing her drums and Jillian was unbuttoning my flannel and flashing the fans! The Portland crowd roared and the girls came out for one more song after they finished their set, the show was ferocious.

The most admirable Cindy Sherman (I’m a fan!) has some competition and his name is Samuel Rosso.  The Times Magazine has a great article about this master of disguise.

NEMO presents American Blur by May Juliette Barruel and Tamar Monhait, a photo exhibit opening on Friday, March 06, 2009 6-10pm. The show will run through Wednesday, April 01, 2009 at NEMO: 1875 SE Belmont Street in Portland, OR. The opening reception will include special musical guest, Sigmund Henry.

American Blur examines the images that make-up the “American” consciousness both individually and collectively. Barruel and Monhait exhibit work that creates the feeling of an overwhelming barrage of the social and physical landscapes identified as “American.”

A native of Grenoble, France and a resident of Portland, Oregon since 2000, May Juliette Barruel works as both an artist and curator. Her textile-based work and photography address the themes of nostalgia, foreignness, obsession and loss in an intimate and often voyeuristic fashion. As a curator, Barruel has been responsible for Stumptown Coffee Roasters’ downtown gallery since 2006. She also owns Nationale, a shop and gallery on Portland’s east side.

Barruel holds a master of arts degree in American Literature from l’Université de Paris Sorbonne Nouvelle and a professional certificate from New England School of Photography in Boston, Massachusetts. 

Tamar Monhait (Tamarmonhait.com) is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Portland, Oregon. She was born and raised in Chicago and has spent time between the two cities studying Electrical Engineering and Art. Her work explores process, ritual, music mathematics, technology, and time. She has participated in group shows at Disjecta, Hall Gallery, PNCA, Mark Woolley, Jace Gace, and the Newberg Gallery at the Glasgow School of Art. She also had solo exhibitions at Stumptown Downtown.

Todd Hido’s work has an unmistakably eery feeling that resonates with the viewer long after they have finished perusing his site. There is a story to be told behind each picture and that story is left entirely to the viewer.

Portland photog, Jake Stangel took a trip up to the 24th annual Mt. Baker Banked Slalom this year and has presented his article in an interesting format, like a mag quality story but for his web site. Solid portraits and and words from the riders really give you an “insiders” feel to what the Banked is all about. Target and Playstation be damned, this is real snowboarding! Check it out here.

It is time once again! February has long been the month for Portland’s famed Doom Town Rock & Roll Fashion show, however this year it goes by a different name,the Sweet F.A. Rock & Roll Fashion show. The production is still headed by two of Portland’s mightiest design minds Erin “Beretta” Cry of Revolver Revolver and Elizabeth Mollo of Disorder Cloths. As for whats in store, i was able to sneak a look at the fashion and speak with some of this years featured designers, and it looks like this year is shaping up to be another Doom Town Productions smash! We were grateful to have the world renowned Jefferson Dancers perform at Studionemo for the Danielle Levitt We Are Experienced photo show, Check out their amazing moves!

They have some great podcasts available with visiting and in house talent. I was listening to an interview with Renny Gleason Global Director of Digital Strategies, and he gushed about this conference, TED, that’s happening as we speak. I had heard about it, but never grasped the impact this particular conference holds. This led me to the TED website where there are a plethora of inspirational, educational, and in all other ways fantastic presentation videos available. And interestingly (and relevant time-wise), they have launched an iphone app with videos of their presentations (YES!!!!!! For a person who loves her iphone mostly because it has a public radio application, I am ecstatic!). 

I began listening to the Jonathan Harris presentation and found myself mesmerized by a digital exploration of human emotions called, WE FEEL FINE (which, yes, I do realize I may be one of the last people on earth to have heard of this). Harris created a system that real time searches blogs for the occurrence of the phrases “I feel” or “I am feeling.” The result is an interactive experience that sorts and slices, by feeling, and or demographic. He talks about an emotional footprint that is left online. This footprint is not new, but maybe relevant because of the number of people it can track.

It’s like a global emotive meter. When I visited a few minutes ago, the above screen grab was the result. People in the world are 1st and foremost feeling like they are failures, and secondly, like the are lucky. It’s like an emotional reflection on the state of the economic global situation. It’s frightening, touching and somewhat consoling to know that there is a consensus.

Saverio Truglia’s photo is almost like a submersed neon sign. The surrealistic gathering of props and makeup combined with the seclusion of being under water make for an interesting juxtapose of familiarity and discomfort.

The GigaPan Epic is a little contraption that well, takes panoramic photos robotically. You just set your area that you want to cover, and this sucker goes to work. It takes hundreds of photos with robotic precision. You then run it through its software and it aligns and merges all the single images into one single cohesive panoramic. Basically takes all the fun of photoshopping all your images together and throws it out the window. Personally, I stay away from panos for that reason. As photographers we are all tormented by the same story, you know, the one where the client or photo editor of any publication will undoubtedly pass over the countless gems and gold you sent in and pick that one piece of pyrite thrown in for good measure.

That historically unwavering tale changes a bit for our young friend Cole. He has not a single piece of pyrite with which to taunt his editors. However, his story takes a turn towards the norm in the chapter where the the shiniest of all his lifestyle gems remain unseen. Take a gander at a bit of his booty on the transworld website Cole Barash Photography Collection. Its sure to make your jealous bone tickle…but if that doesn’t put the feather to your jealous joint his blog surely will.

Polaroid is back! Well…kinda. A group of Ex-Polaroid employees and fans came together bought an old Polaroid factory in the Netherlands and plan to be fully operational by the beginning of 2010! Thing is they’re starting from scratch, that means new formulas and compounds for processing the instant film (old pola chemicals are no longer available), engineering new equipment, so on and so on… like their site says, they are re-inventing instant film. They have quite the challenge in front of them and their deadline is only 1 year! This comes as great news to all fans of Polaroid, this is like the resurrection of fun! I fully support and endorse this “zombie Polaroid” project 100%, and you should too! Check out their web site here for more info.

It really didn’t get much better than burning through a pack of sx-70 film. Ah, the memories…

Trevor came in this morning with this classic Grant Brittian print of Chris Miller. Immediately it caught my eye, I went over to TG and asked what was up with the shot. “This photo changed my life.” is what he says to me. ” You know when you draw an image over and over? It’s like an album cover you really like or something, I must have drawn this image over 100 times.”  I was a bit stunned staring at this photo while listening to TG go on like like a schoolgirl about this photo. This image inspired Trevor graves to pick up a camera, which in turn TG created images that inspired a myriad of shred photogs to do the same (raises hand). It kind of blew my mind for a split second knowing that if Grant never took this photo or if TG never saw this, I and many other photographers may not be doing what we’re doing now. Which makes me realize that inspiring creativity is much more rewarding than dollars and cents, make sense? Heavy stuff, right? Williams and SLAP editor Mark Whiteley for an interesting chat covering Tobin’s past with Thrasher Magazine, his influences, where his career is heading and other little tid-bits that give insight as to what makes Tobin tick. I’ve been lagging my posts since the holidays began. I hope everyone’s holidays are wonderful and you’re enjoying the leisure time. In my leisure time I came across this wonderful new photo rep agency, Tinker Street. I love what founder Jessie Miller is doing, a rep after my own heart. His international collective of photographers are really inspirational : from Gothenburg (Thobias Faldt), Dusseldorf (Bernd Wichmann) and Paris (Estelle Hanania), in Los Angeles Ye Rin Mok  and Peter Sutherland and in New York Nicholas Haggard. 

Here’s an excerpt of Jessie’s interview with Avisualsociety:

1. Why the name Tinker Street?

Tinker is… hmm.   Well, I guess it’s just a little detour I like to take when ever opportunity shines my way.  It’s my road to happy accidents.

2. What is your background and experience?

Started as an artist/filmmaker/musician and ended up working in the commercial world to pay the rent.  It was the closest thing that I could find to do – given my priorities, skill set and attention span – short of being a full-time artist.  Aiming to meld the two now.

3. Can you describe the impetus that lead to the founding of Tinker Street?  What would the mission statement of Tinker Street be?

The impetus was to spend more time out of the city, work with people I liked and create a group that was closer to my heart artistically.
