If you open up the latest issue of GQ, you’ll see lots of metro dude stuff. But you also may find X-Games champ and lunatic extraordinaire Travis Pastrana gracing the pages in some damn fine suits. Travis rallied around the streets of downtown LA with photographer Peggy Sirota for the fashion piece on the summer’s “daredevil-ish” looks. Always fun/weird to see one of our own action sports athletes get all dressed up like a 9-5’er.

Man is this woman on it. I have a serious photo crush on her work! Food photography is a give and take based on personal taste (*insert laugh here) and is completely dependent on styling and lighting. Anna Williams brings all the elements seamlessly and as it would appear effortlessly together to create this absolutely amazing body of food photography. Then to top it all off she pieces her work together in very unusual ways to create single yet incredibly eye catching dyad.

It’s art opening season, and Nemo Design is coming in hot with our first show of 2011: Accomplished snow and skateboard artists RYNO and Quincy Quigg. You’ve seen their work on Lib Tech boards, Volcom gear, and in the pages of Thrasher magazine. Complementing the aesthetic, Seattle-based musical guests Wildildlife will dispense their heavy, heavy space rock sound.
Back in December, a few of our Nemoites, along with fun-loving photographerEmbry Rucker, took a little trip down to sunny San Diego to enjoy bikes, beaches and bonfires to create the new campaign for Nike Vision’s Vintage sunglass collection. Needless to say the rest of us in the offices were stoked to see the photos, and not so stoked to see that they scored amazing weather in December. People can get pretty defensive in the argument of women vs men in sports, but let me assure you, women’s surfing has come a long way. Nike 6.0’s team of female surfers are not only showing up most of the boys, but they seem to be completely re-writing the present and future of women’s surfing. Here at Nemo, we’ve been traveling with, photographing, art directing and supporting most of these girls since the start of 6.0- Kari Rowe was recently down in Mex with Monyca Byrne-Wickey shooting for Sweet Cheeks (big sale at Roozt.com right now!)- and we couldn’t be prouder of the release of their new flick, Leave A Message. Featuring Malia, Lakey, Monyca, Carissa, Coco, and Laura, 6.0’s first legit surf film premieres May 19 in Los Angeles, and will be available for download May 24!
For those of us who dread purchasing the whole Suite for $700+, Adobe has just launched a brand new rental program for their creative suite lineup. Programs start at just $29 a month, and go up from there (photoshop runs $50/month). If you haven’t been able shell out the cash, hate having to upgrade, rarely use it, or haven’t figured out how to steal it by now, this is an awesome option, especially for freelancers who may only need the program every so often for certain clients or jobs. Winter is over in Portland! The sun is coming back out! I’m sure I’ve just completely jinxed the pacific NW with that, but still, it’s exciting be able to go outside again. With longer days and sunnier skies, photographers can get shooting back outdoors again. So here is a great tool for anyone depending on that big ball of fire in the sky to light up their models. Lighttrac is an app for iPad and iPhone that tracks and forecasts the position of the sun according to the shoot location- sunrise, sunset, directional light, time, duration, angle, everything you would need to get the sun where you wanted it without scouting the location days ahead. The app costs $3.99, which is well worth it to impress your friends with your new-found mastery of ambient light.
We love Chase Jarvis– he is the master of photo efficiency. Aside from shooting breath-taking photos for some of the worlds biggest brands, he runs a non-stop photo blog, packed with more information than you know what to do with. I recently stumbled upon a video of Chase breaking down everything that goes into an advertising shoot- in under 4 minutes. This video is actually from 2008, but that doesn’t make it any less useful. Pretty impressive how in 180 seconds he shows the 6 major steps to a successful shoot: concepts/contracts/pre-production; travel; scouting; shooting; post-production; and delivery.
Wanna be retro and cool? Of course you do. Everybody these days has a Holga camera, so how do you take that fun to the next level? Throw that cheapo plastic lens on your pro DSLR. HolgaDirect now makes a conversion kit, allowing Nikon and Canon cameras to accept a full range of the toy lenses including a macro, telephoto, and wide angle. This is actually a pretty cool way to get the Holga feel with none of the hassle or cost of developing and printing the film. The kit runs about $70, check it out here.
Head’s up- if you have any interest in surfboards, classic motorcycles, hand-painted art, custom bicycles, and/or photography, you may become extremely jealous after watching the following video. Deus Ex Machina, aka the “temple of enthusiasm,” is the brainchild of former surf photo legend and current ex-pat Dustin Humphrey. In 2006, Humphrey released Sipping Jetstreams, possibly the most successful and sought after photo book of this generation. In 2007, D. Hump disappeared completely, leaving the editorial surf world wondering where and why. Turns out he was putting all of his attnention into Deus Ex Machina in Bali, Indonesia- a paradise within a paradise. Take a tour of this wonderland in the video below. For further info on D.
