I remember for a science fair in grade school, I made a zoetrope to illustrate the illusion of motion from a series of still images, which at the time I think was a hand drawn stick figure skateboarder doing an ollie. Well looks like the zoetrope technology and made leaps and bounds since those humble science fair days. Sony Bravia, best known for their sleek, sexy flatscreens and groundbreaking creative direction for TV ads (click here), is back with a different approach. They built the worlds largest and fastest zoetrope installation ever and plopped it right in the middle of Venaria, Italy. From the looks of it, it looks like some kind of space ship/mod art, but when this thing gets moving, up to 50Km/hr, you get a surprising visual experience. In this case its Brazilian football star Ricardo Kaka kicking around the ball. All of this is used to debut Sony’s new Motion Flow technology, making for smoother action on their new line of flatscreens. Conceptually it’s very interesting, taking an ancient technology, beefing it up and have it explain how a new technology essentially works. Watch the video for a more detailed explanation from the production crew.

This past weekend The Holy Oly Revival went off with out a hitch for the it’s 6th year now. Even the avalanche that took out Its usual spot for the course at Summit of Snoqualmie could not stop the NW best event from going off. Krush Kaluza and the rest of Snowboy Productions made it happen, with an assortment of jibs, bonks, logs, cobradogs and the biggest hip the Holy Oly has ever seen. Pro’s and random joe’s young and old came out to huck for that 1st place spot and a pallette… a whole freaking pallette of Olympia beer! Nick @ YOBEAT was awesome enough to trasnsport myself and video guy Austin Will to the event, Check out their site for more shots, video and contest results of the most Unholy Holy Oly, click here.

Portland photog, Jake Stangel took a trip up to the 24th annual Mt. Baker Banked Slalom this year and has presented his article in an interesting format, like a mag quality story but for his web site. Solid portraits and and words from the riders really give you an “insiders” feel to what the Banked is all about. Target and Playstation be damned, this is real snowboarding! Check it out here.

We Are Experienced by Danielle Levitt Book Signing & Exhibit
Thursday, February 12, 2009
7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
420 North Fairfax Ave.
Los Angeles, California
We were proud to have the Beaverton High School Beaver Band perform for Danielle Levitt’s: We Are Experienced. Dude, they played Journey and the Final Countdown to name a few jams… All killer, no filler! Great Job! Yeah Toast!
So, here I am trying to wrap my jobs from the previous week, spending a little time in front of the computer today. I decided to listen to my friend Connie Wohn’s interview on the newly launched w+k radio and the experience snowballed!
They have some great podcasts available with visiting and in house talent. I was listening to an interview with Renny Gleason Global Director of Digital Strategies, and he gushed about this conference, TED, that’s happening as we speak. I had heard about it, but never grasped the impact this particular conference holds. This led me to the TED website where there are a plethora of inspirational, educational, and in all other ways fantastic presentation videos available. And interestingly (and relevant time-wise), they have launched an iphone app with videos of their presentations (YES!!!!!! For a person who loves her iphone mostly because it has a public radio application, I am ecstatic!).
I began listening to the Jonathan Harris presentation and found myself mesmerized by a digital exploration of human emotions called, WE FEEL FINE (which, yes, I do realize I may be one of the last people on earth to have heard of this). Harris created a system that real time searches blogs for the occurrence of the phrases “I feel” or “I am feeling.” The result is an interactive experience that sorts and slices, by feeling, and or demographic. He talks about an emotional footprint that is left online. This footprint is not new, but maybe relevant because of the number of people it can track.
It’s like a global emotive meter. When I visited a few minutes ago, the above screen grab was the result. People in the world are 1st and foremost feeling like they are failures, and secondly, like the are lucky. It’s like an emotional reflection on the state of the economic global situation. It’s frightening, touching and somewhat consoling to know that there is a consensus.
Stop motion is used a lot these days, but this is a unique and wonderful result…
