Hope is a Muscle: Photos from the Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls by Shayla Hason

PORTLAND, OR – Nemo Design presents Shayla Hason’s Hope is a Muscle: Photos from the Rock

n’ Roll Camp for Girls exhibit opening on Friday, June 06, 2008. The show will run through Tuesday, July

01, 2008 at Nemo Design: 1875 SE Belmont Street in Portland, OR.

“It has been a great honor to watch the camp grow, and with every session to see the girls gain

knowledge, confidence and strength in a single week. As a documentary photographer, I am most

interested in the small, sublime moments at camp and the interactions between the girls in the days

leading up to the showcase,” said Hason, who has been taking photographs at the Rock n Roll Camp

for Girls since 2001, the second year of its existence.

Hason is a photographer and musician living in Portland Oregon. She received a BA in Cultural and

Interdisciplinary Studies from Antioch College, and in 2006 was awarded a Caldera Arts Residency.

Her photography has been exhibited around the world, and has appeared in numerous magazines

such as Oprah, WWD, ANP, and Arthur magazines. Her frequent travels and investigations are

documented in Adventures In High Contrast Living, a photo zine she has been producing since

1999. An unrepentant bookworm, she was delighted to be included in the Vice Photo Book and

the upcoming Submerged: Tales From The Basin. Her personal work can be seen online via

The Rock’n’Roll Camp for Girls, a 501(c)3 non-profit, builds girls self-esteem through music creation

and performance. Providing workshops and technical training, we create leadership opportunities,

cultivate a supportive community of peers and mentors, and encourage social change and the

development of life skills.
